Sorry if previously posted but I came across this clip of the 2 syncros in the 1990 Australian Safari. The Dutch site where its posted states that these were the only 2 RHD 16" Syncros ever made. Not sure that's right-what do the expert's reckon?

yes there were only 2 RHD 16's ever built, they dont exist on factory records, ones a doka, the other a van. Aus wouldnt allow LHD vehicles to compete in the rally or even be driven on the public roads without special permissions etc, so VW built 2 "special" RHD 16" syncros,
these vehicles were supposed to be returned to Germany after the rally's etc as they did not fully comply to ADR's, but i heard that 2 container loads of red dirt was shipped back to the vw factory to assist in the devlopment of new cars and dust systems etc, the 2 16"'s were just left here, (urban myth? but it sounds good!)
the 16" syncro is a totally different car to the 14, it has strength plates on the door corners, the metal in certain parts was thicker, and most of the running gear was borrowed from the european LT28, there are quite a few parts that are unique to the 16 as well, so while the load capacity of the 14 is a ton, the 16 is almost 3 ton.
i guess its as different as buying a sedan or a station wagon, sure they are the same, but its not factory or dealer option, its a different vehicle.

I concur. List of M-codes is how many describes the 16". However, they are a different animal altogether. It would be like comparing a Golf to a GTI and saying it's just a group of options.
We have a member or two in RSA who have 16's in the Syncro16 List & Registry. Unfortunately, I am not presently able to check my records to confirm if they left the factory as RHD.

The two Australian vehicles were fully complianced as they are the same model with the optional 16" package. They have compliance plates.
I know that the body is different to a 14", but it is designated the same model number with "M" option 625. Just like ordering a radio!
If it is a model 254 then it is a model 254 whether it is a 14" or 16".
