83.5 to 91 Acccessory Front Heater Shut Off Valve

All,

Checkout Terry Kay's US parts site: http://community-2.webtv.net/VanStuff/VanagonWestfalia/

Scroll down towards the bottom, you'll find his add-on solution for sale re heater shut off valve.

I've always wondered about his claimed solution for the hot footwell issue most of us put up with during summer and what the a/c has to fight against.

He says its due to the existing heater shut off valve not shutting off properly. I agree. But is that the primary or is it only the secondary issue?

What about all the heat displaced from the radiator and flowing back onto the footwell metalwork? Isn't this the primary source of the problem?

Thoughts anyone?

Cheers.

Ken,

Yonks ago, I remember seeing an insulating kit for the footwell somewhere.  It is so long ago that I am not entirely sure of the details but I think that the primary purpose might have been to prevent heat loss during European winters but it also acted as an insulator against radiator heat.

Buy a new one. They're cheap. Same as Golf.
That was a factory mod/recall on early ones.

I think you are 100% correct Ken. Firstly if you have a GOOD heater valve and install it correctly you will have no leakage. I always adjust the cable to bias the closing rather than opening. Secondly all you have to do is look at the rad fan and the piece of floor pan that comes down at a right angle just behind it to see why the floor gets hot. I think a spaced heat shield is needed here. Also the fibre boards that Les and Phill mentioned help alot. Gowesty is reproducing them from plastic I think. I think the non genuine a/c has a major design error in the size of the evaporator and the ability of  fan. Greg E

Phill,
With my heater shut off valve, at present it will only close fully if levered closed that little bit extra from underneath ... it only needs to be manually pushed on its closing lever say another 2-4mm.
In other words, shifting the dash lever to the fully off position, won't fully close it. Is there then an adjustment in the connecting cable/linkages that might remedy that?
Cheers.

Greg,
I tend to agree, probably some sort of offset heat shield fastened in front of the footwell metalwork sounds the goods, question is, is it doable?

What say you then re cable adjustment bias to closing it? Is the cable adjustable at the top or the bottom or both? How so?

Cheers.

Ken, remove your spare tyre and you will see the heater valve up there. The clip that holds the sheath of the cable in place is the adjustment. I adjust it so that when you push the lever to cold at the very end of its travel you feel the resistance of the valve closing. This may cause the valve not to open 100% when on hot but 95% will not affect the heaters ability. Greg E

Greg,
Ok thanks a lot for that, I must admit I've looked at that shut-off valve a few times, but I hadn't "joined the dots" and realised there was adjustment down there.
Up till now I've manually fully closed it from underneath and avoided touching the dash lever, knowing if I did, it'd be another trip downunder to close it off yet again.
Live and learn.
If successful, this revelation may affect Terry Kays future sales of his ancillary shut-off valve. I wonder why he hasn't mentioned the adjustment for the OEM valve?  HA!

Cheers.

Ken if you can move the heater valve arm alot under the car it may be that the sheath has slipped out from under the same style clip at the lever.
