Campervan freshwater tank maintenance

All,
Sooner or later the fixed campervan freshwater tank will "tell you" it needs a clean out, especially when you turn on the tap.

I've just cleaned mine utilising the method described in the attachment. Repeat periodically.

Cheers.

Ken

Hi KEN. I can't open your attachment and my fresh water tank badly needs a scrub. Could you please describe the guts of the cleaning process? Thanks Bill.

Too expensive! ;)

Adobe Reader is free.

http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/

Most people have this reader to open PDF file.

Full version of reader and writer has to be purchased.

Phill,
Yeah you could well be right eh.
So anyone who can't afford adobe reader, I'll hand deliver to you a hardcopy of any of my pdf doccos ... australia mainland only. ;-)

Les, there seems to me to be ongoing problems with members unable to open/read attached Microsoft Word docs in their various formats of .doc and .docx, meaning much time taken up sorting members who have such difficulties.

So standardising/converting to Adobe reader pdf format of any attachments being posted by members would probably eliminate this ongoing issue. Phill already does this with his, the rest of us should follow suit. To that end, the .doc files I uploaded to the files section yesterday, I have now replaced with .pdf format files. Now let's see if anyone still has file access issues.

Cheers.

Ken,

Yahoo have done it again; they have changed the Attachments regime for the umpteenth time.  I got into the Management functions after Bill told me that he couldn’t get the attachment.  I find that the options have changed (again!) and they can be attached to the email OR to the website – but not both.

It then becomes a matter of the least inconvenience to the majority of the members and I have left it as it is for the moment.

PDF is probably a good way to go.  This will cover the few members who can’t open a Word document – and this is a problem with the individual member’s computer, not our website.

As you can see, Yahoo is going through an excitable stage at the moment.  I got EIGHT notifications that a new file had been uploaded!

Les,
Yahoo getting excited? I'd like to see that!! They might actually do something useful if they did.

I suspect the Yahoo notifications you are receiving are generated as a consequence of the likes of me adding files in the files section. Two scenarios, one is that each new file uploaded to the files section generates a notification to you or else secondly, notifications to you happen as a consequence of file uploaders having available the option for each file to "tick the box" flag option that if ticked, generates a notification.

Think about those possibilities ok.
Cheers.

Ken,

Because I am the group owner, all additions to the website are automatically posted to me; this is how it is structured by Yahoo, not me.  A lot of stuff comes through to me that is never seen by the members.  This includes applications to join, of course.  The membership continues to increase and, since the total revision, we now know that the membership number reflects the number of Syncros, less the couple who are looking to buy one.

Bill,
Too easy but I'm thinking this issue presents a golden opportunity to establish more effective and uniform communications to forum members for the future, something this forum has struggled with in the past and Les has usually had to take the brunt of it all, he's got enough to do.
So please bare with this just for a bit longer ok. Here are a few questions needing answers from affected list members please ....

Anyone having issues with opening posted/filed attachments be it a .doc, .docx, .jpg or .pdf etc formatted files?

Anyone who can't open ANY attachments?

Anyone who hasn't got any version of Microsoft Word installed?

Anyone who hasn't got Adobe Reader installed?

I'd like to think there are those amongst us who can assist with resolving any issues that respondents might highlight to any of the above questions or else we change to another file format that suits 100% of members.

Anyone please, let's get this sorted right now ok.
Cheers.

Ken,

I think that pdf and jpg should be the standard. (Even Apples can open them).

Word doc. can be troublesome on macs and work computers.

Hi Ken, Les et al,
As a Mac user I have no trouble with any of the formats, be they .doc, .docx, .pdf, .jpg, rar, or whatever, as there are plenty of free programs to open these - however .pdf and jpg are a good standard.
As I have said, I subscribe to the group in digest form, as I am a member of about 10 groups, and if I don't check my mail for few days it would overflow if I got individual posts.
Consequently I would prefer the attachments be be attached to the website where all can see them, and they are there for reference into the future - surely you don't keep all your emails on your computer?
Having said this, I see the last couple of attachments as a box below the message titled inside "Attachment, Water tank Maintenance.pdf, Type: application/pdf" that I am unable to open.
Previously they lodged in the Attachments folder below Messages on the left hand side of the web page.
Perhaps this is the price of progress, but Yahoo worked well for a while - Ken, what are you like sending smoke signals?

Regards,

Bob T
Bob,
Haha .. heh I'm the one sending the files, not the recipient relying on smoke signals to receive them!

Les must be going crazy having to constantly repeat post his frustrations concerning Yahoos autocratic and constantly changing decisions concerning management of file attachments and the either/or methods of attachment delivery he finds himself stuck with. So at best, he can only set the system to please a majority, not all.

I suspect a majority of members interact with the syncro forum through their own personal email facility. Meaning then that with Les's current settings for attachments, all posts and the occasional attachments reach a majority of members routinely. Sounds to me then like you've chosen to place yourself amongst the minority, clearly frustrating for you being unable to readily access attachments and frustrating for Les stuck with trying to satisfy everyone. Seems to me to be a case of the impossible mission.

I used to interact with the forum via the syncro forum webpage but I eventually gave up on that as being less convenient. I normally only visit there now if I want to check the file & photos section, polls etc.

Which reminds me .... are there any members who experience difficulties navigating/accessing/downloading files and pics from the files section? If not, then perhaps it would be useful to all if attachers also upload their attachments routinely into the files section.

Bob, I think I've helped you ... not one jot! But thanks a lot for the post all the same.

Maybe we need a poll on this issue? But then again .. methinks probably an exercise in futility.

Cheers.

Ken

Campervan Water Tanks – maintenance procedure

Cleaning/Deodorising/Sanitising a Campervan Freshwater Tank

Step 1

Drain and flush the tank. Check for any further residual sediment, flush out if still present. Close tank drainpipe outlet.

Step 2

For say a 50 litre tank, add a cup of household bleach to 5 litres of fresh water into a suitable pouring container. Pour this mix into the tank inlet. Now see if the pump will prime the tap. Add some more water until it does. Once you receive a steady stream, turn off the tap. Do not be alarmed by the smell of chlorine. This method gets a concentrate of mix into the reticulation pipes. Now fill the tank with fresh water until just full using a potable water hose.

Step 3

Leave this mix to do its work for a number of hours or even better, overnight. Then drive the van around with this solution mix still in place. This will slosh the mixture around.

Step 4

Drain the tank and then repeat flush with water as necessary until satisfied.

Step 5

If necessary, repeat any of the above.

Warning: If you have a Fiamma (Trakka vans do) tank inlet fitting, it has an unsealed bleed outlet in the back of the fitting. I sealed mine years ago. The risk is when backflushing/overflowing the tank system, water may/will enter the back of your cupboards/floor space/inside of body panels etc. This may also exacerbate rusting of body panels so needs to be avoided. You’ve all fish oiled the insides of your floor level body panels behind the cupboards etc. … right?

Hint: Filling the tank via the inlet sucks. Much to do with Trakkas crappy plumbing fittings and method. For fast filling the tank, I modified the water tank outlet to a snap-on hose connection. Tank fills very fast, very simple operation and tank back-flushes really well using a hose with town water pressure.

Cheers.

Yes Ken,

I suspect you are correct - the Anti - Discrimination Commission is not interested we poor Mac and digest users.
However your suggestion that people who post attachments also put them in the Attachments or Files folders would be a great idea.
Can I give you the job of policing this?

In expectation,

Bob T
