Thank you Phill !   That is   - incredible  - and why does anybody believe we can cool a whole moving car with a  tiny 3kw compressor????????  And Phill’s trains are well insulated AND all the glass is UV dark and reflecting.   Hart

The problem with our trains is that the doors are open at every station in Sydney.

I don't think that the compressor is the problem, it's the ducting. The genuine a/c units work great with the overhead ducts.

I can attest to that. Have most factory AC types in my various T3's plus had the dealer installed Behr in-dash AC.

The early overhead AC with the evaporator and fans by the B-pillar (and next to the driver's head) works just as well as the later rear evap system. The latter having the fan all the way in the back does not seem to affect the efficiency of cooling to the driver and front passenger. Same can be said of the Behr in-dash unit.

I couldn't say the same for the rear only (no ductwork to front) AC's as installed in Westfalia campers. There's virtually no cooling making it to the front. I did have an opportunity to ride in a friend's Westy with simple clothes dryer ductwork rigged to bring air forward. The fact that his system worked as well as the later style non-Westy AC's is a testament to the ductwork type system iMHO.

I might be mistaken, but I believe all the factory units in the later T3's are made by Behr. I am traveling and away from my laptop. Otherwise, I might be able to get you whatever info you need re: in-dash Behr.

Since most later model Vanagons (US delivered T3's) came with factory AC, there wasn't much of a market for the dealer installed add-on AC. At least around here, they are commonly found in the pre-85 models. Market value of used units are US$200-$725. Typically buyer is a Westy owner who wants the unit as a supplement to existing factory AC. Most famous installation was in Jimmy Buffet's Syncro Westfalia with an Adventurewagen hightop.

The downside of the Behr in-dash AC is it took up the space behind the glove box leaving only enough space for a few folded maps. It also had a vent which is installed in the radio opening. The install kit came with a radio relocation kit which placed the radio front face up on the floor in front of the shifter. It's a crappy location at best.

All the in-dash Behr AC's I've seen are on LHD vehicles. I've never looked into how the ductwork would work in a RHD T3.

There is a clone of the Behr made by a company called DPD in Texas. At a glance, it is easy to mistake one for the other. The DPD is easier to install as they eliminated the square bulkhead fitting on the Behr which is very difficult to fit properly. The DPD just needs to separate round holes without the necessity for super accurate measurements. They also made a cover for unit so when the glovebox is open, you don't have to stare at the guts of the unit. Overall quality is relatively similar. Except the plastic parts have a cheap looking shine vs. matte finish on the Behr. Pricing is about half of the Behr unit. Only available used nowadays.

A less known unit also sold in the 80's is an underseat Behr rear AC. I've seen them on rare occasions in old camper conversions. I never knew they  were made specifically for the T3 until I found a unit for sale at an estate sale. The former owner had a shop which closed when he passed away. I thought I was buying a brand new Behrbin dash AC missing only the vent. Upon closer inspection, it appeared all wrong. I dug up the included installation manual and low and behold. It's a rear AC. Blower system installs under the rear bench. Ductwork is intended for installation on the each bulkhead next to the bench. With longer hoses, you could run these all the way to the front. The downside is lost storage under the seat.

Mark,

If you set your preference to “Individual Emails” in your details under the Membership function, they come through your inbox with all attachments.

Yahoo changes options from time to time and this is now the only way to get attachments.  I have no control over this.

Buy a proper grown ups computer!
Hi Peter,I sent you an email to your private address however have not had a reply to it.Anyway good to hear you got home safely and that the Syncro performed to your expectations. In releation to the removal of the Hub Caps the socket provided does have a little play however you need to line it up and work on the Nut slowly and it eventually does come off.It only takes a couple of turns to Free It Up.In relation to The Steering Wheel, please be advised that it is The Original Steering Wheel that came with the Vehicle from NEW.You probably are referring to The Horn Pad that Mark took a photo of.That was NOT the original Horn Pad for the vehicle.I replaced it with the Original Horn Pad that was on the Vehicle. The inference that someone in The Group has the Original Steering Wheel, therefore is INCORRECT.I hope this clears up the AIR in relation to this topic.
I do wish you many years of Happy Trouble free Motoring with this UNIQUE SYNCRO.
Awaiting the return of my Personalised Number Plates.
Cheers,
Everard

Hey Guys,
Home safe with the new Syncro Tracker and what a beautiful machine she is.
The cruise control is fantastic on the highway. The ride height is low on the front compared with my empty telstra van and i will be getting that fixed with some new springs & shocks in the new year.
The sound proofing in the caravell is very good and the kit for this includes some extra rubbers on the front door so its like, silent! at any speed in any gear.
The canvas has been replaced in the pop top and looks great however im not sure how waterproof it will be?
The motor goes well and has heaps of power almost sounds like an electric one.
The VC needs replacing as its tight so now i have to get two.
The body is very good with small scrapes and dints but very good for a 20 year old 4x4,
Plenty of red dust in all places outside the vehicle so she has been used but i would say with great care considering the overall condition of the van.
Everard did about 10000 klms so the previous owner was very much the best owner a syncro could wish for.

The steering wheel has been replaced with a standard 2 wd type so when you see it on someones vw <in our group> you will know he is the dingo who had no respect for this vehicles unique package.
Everard should have refused his offer but thats life, and time wounds all heels.
Anyway the vehicle is now safe and i am very happy to have it. Will keep it in my shed untill i can sort out some little things that need fixing VC etc.
By the way how do you get the tool to work that removes the alloy plate on the mag wheels. Tried the spanner thing but the nut plug thing would not budge? Lucky no flat on the trip but i would have got it off somehow
Thanks Hart for the kind conversation we had on the phone and i look foward to catching up in the new year.

Regards Pete

Bit cheeky Phil.
I remember back in '91 when starting out in graphic design. The Mac was the only one that was grown up enough to do the job ( just ).
PC's have grown up a it but the platform is still incredibly ugly and non-intuitive.
You knew I would have to bite didn't ya !

Mark,

I have been through the entire help files but can’t find anything that has changed – since the last time that Yahoo implemented their ‘improvements’.

The situation is still that attachments can either be attached to each individual email or automatically sent to a file on the website. This is an either or situation; we can have one but not both.

I have used the individual email setting because it appears to best serve the majority of members.

The type of computer you use is not relevant (sorry Phill) but the individual email settings are.
