Christmas Holidays

Anyone who is holidaying between Port Mac and Coffs the weeks after Christmas let me know and we can catch up,and make a day out for the buses.

And don’t forget to visit, we are on the Hastings River  2 min off Pacific Hwy. You can camp, fish, bbq, drive the slasher, or xchange the shockies  (large shed / workshop all the stuff like presses, lathe,

Welding etc ) or just drink beer......... bathroom facilities, fridge, freezer (sorry Roger, no Westinghouse ) Ken, are you coming to fix my digi clock??

Yep, take northern exit towards Port, turn left into Oakes Cresc. Go  to 107 at Waters Edge.

Ben,

We are meandering between Port & Crescent Head Area over the Christmas to New Year Period.

That reminds me - must reinstall the central drive shaft.

Cheers,

Scott, you should really put the shaft back in after you get to your destination.Hwy driving can kill vcs,as you know.I carry mine in the back till I get to Hat Head, the second thing I do after setting up camp is,reverse up the levy, raise the front wheels just off the ground, and bolt the shaft in.I then remove it again for the trip back home. The first thing I will buy next year is a decoupler, before the suby conversion.I have decided to go a US one(no machining involved),and hopefully the dollar stays up.Are you keen on one too.

I am considering it - but with the mortgage, very high maintenance/ expensive wife, 2 expensive kids and a large tax bill to pay my budget will be a tad short for a while.

My diff lock plate has a cigarette lighter plug in that spot (for the decoupler) so I will need to put it in the front lock spot - I assume?

The wiring is all there and labelled even for a front locker - but I don't like my chances of ever even wanting a front locker.

Is there any electrical conflicts with placing the decoupler switch in the front locker position?

Cheers,

Scott

Hartmut,
Avoiding summertime and pesky school holidays are my prerequisites for timing a relaxed trip. I quite enjoy your neck of the woods and hinterlands so yes, you just might get your clock a good seeing to sooner than later!
Cheers.

Hartmut sounds like you live in my kind of heaven with all that gear on tap. I shall be battling the swap of my new springs and OME shocks in my tiny back garden in inner city Melbourne shortly!

One day we will have to visit you.

Hi Gary, I don’t envy you , my advice, start with the rear, it’s easy and once done there is NO excuse not to do the front, in fact you have to do the front.

And please,  Gary, be ever so careful, sit back and evaluate your every move , as these critters are totally unforgiving. Keep a good situational awareness at all times, and wear glasses.

Alternatively come up to Port for Chrissi  with  kids and all, heaps to do here and we battle the thingos together.           hartmut        P.S.  and Scott watching !

Hartmut, yes, I can't say i'm looking forward to it especially the fronts and i will be very careful, i've planned it in my head after your description at DOVW just have to get all the parts together as i want to change the top ball joint rubber boots at the same time.

Your offer sounds like fun, especially the pulling syncros to bits in the company of other like minded nutters enthusiasts but alas have ten days booked camping down here.

Another time though. Maybe we should have a Victorian Syncro outing to Hartmut's place!

Ben,

This is a technical support group and I would like you to tell us all how “highway driving can kill VCs…”  Please do not spare any technical detail.  This is what the group is all about – providing verifiable technical information.

It’s a way off but I’ll be going to the Valla ‘VW Spectacular’ (29/7 to 2/8/2010). I know there’s always plenty of NSW & a few Qld Syncros there, but maybe we could organise a convoy from Melbourne and all have a few days/week before or after at Hart’s.

Cheers

Gary

Brian,

I and the family are taking both the Syncro and the 71 deluxe 2wd up for that crazy weekend in 2010. See you up there!

Actually have done that run a few times now (about 5) and the first time I did it I met Phil (he had his old Golf up there not his beloved Syncro)  and I also met a complete syncro nutter in Port Macquarie just prior to the event who also went up. I haven't seen him since but and he either killed his syncro - he used to give it a hard time or sold it. Maybe Hartmut knows him?

Anyway it will be fun.

Cheers,

Scott

Ben,

Thank you for your response.

Your initial proposition was “Hwy driving can kill vcs, as you know.”

You offer the following:

  1. ….this is my opinion on what I have read about, researched and experienced about Syncro/Quattro.
  2. We all know how it works right??...
  3. But does it really work as it should.
  4. How much really, does it matter, about difference.
  5. Differen ce in tyre height/tyre wear/tyre pressure/un even weight distribution/ vehicle height/incorrect W/A, front and rear,/road camber/road speed/road surface/braking? ?
  6. Do you have an aggressive VC???
  7. Have you tested it?
  8. Rekon shes worn, oils had it?, maybe the air gap isnt big enough?
  9. Is the VC getting too hot, from highway driving, is it binding while parking?.... .
  10. Its complicated if you are a VC...
  11. You dont have a computer yet.
  12. I just rekon, the lower the speed, the less pavement driving, the less city, and parking, the less use, the longer Syncro will work.
  13. I dont like the idea about solid shafts, although they do have their advantages, but I would rather go the, All Wheel Drive , on tap method..  A good vc with a decoupler.
  14. But thats just my opinion.

My comments:

  1. I have a working knowledge with the viscous coupling going back to the Jensen Interceptor, which used a viscous coupling supplied by FF (Formula Ferguson) in the mid 60’s.  My reading of papers in professional literature and my experience in engineering AWD systems at GMH does not support an adverse view of the functionality of viscous couplings, particularly in respect of duty cycle and service life
  2. That is a given
  3. Refer to comment 1
  4. Not sure what difference you are referring to
  5. For any comparisons to be meaningful, they must be based on the vehicle being set up to the manufacturer’s as-designed specifications.  Implicit is that items subject to service wear are, if not new, at least within usable specifications.  In the case of the Syncro, this includes new or equally worn tyres
  6. Yes
  7. Yes
  8. No.  It shows the change in characteristics commensurate with the service ago of the viscous coupling
  9. See comment 8
  10. ?
  11. ?
  12. This is true of every part of the vehicle, from the tyres, through every mortal part of the gearbox and the engine, all the way back to the rubber on the accelerator pedal.  It is not specific to the viscous coupling.  Everything has a service life.
  13. Solid shafts are a different topic.  A decoupler provides selectable AWD.  There is a strong case for a decoupler, particularly with an aggressive viscous coupling.  An aggressive VC contributes to improved handling and braking but is detrimental to drive line loading when making full lock turns on high grip surfaces.  I have a decoupler; I decouple for such full lock turns but otherwise run in AWD.
  14. We have moved from “as you know” to “that’s my opinion”.

I started this group as a technical support and advice resource for Syncro owners in Australia .  Within this group are a number of people (both here and overseas) with substantial expertise in the Syncro and its idiosyncrasies but the majority of the members are those whose lack such specific knowledge and it was for those people that I started the group in the first place.  For benefit of that majority, it is incumbent on those with the high levels of expertise to offer verifiable technical help and not cloud issues with matters of opinion.  The end value of this group is determined by the veracity of the technical support and advice that can be offered.

Les

Subject: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Highway Driving Can Kill VCS

Les,this is my opinion on what I have read about, researched and experienced about Syncro/Quattro. We all know how it works right??...But does it really work as it should.
How much really, does it matter, about difference.Differen ce in tyre height/tyre wear/tyre pressure/un even weight distribution/ vehicle height/incorrect W/A,front and rear,/road camber/road speed/road surface/braking? ?Do you have an aggressive VC???Have you tested it?Rekon shes worn, oils had it?,maybe the air gap isnt big enough? Is the VC getting too hot, from highway driving,is it binding while parking?.... .Its complicated if you are a VC...You dont have a computer yet.
I just rekon, the lower the speed, the less pavement driving, the less city, and parking, the less use,the longer Syncro will work.
I dont like the idea about solid shafts, although they do have their advantages, but I would rather go the, All Wheel Drive ,on tap method..A good vc with a decoupler. But thats just my opinion.
