Clutch kit in Sydney

Hi everyone, hope you had a good Christmas and are settling into the next few days of party and firecrackers.


I am ergently looking for a clutch kit to replace mine before I go on a long drive down south. Is there a place open these days that has one or someone with a spare on the forum. 


Would be great to here from someone,

Jens. I got one from Tooleys in Sydney as part of my gearbox recondition. Not sure if they are open over the break but their service is excellent.

although tooley's imports was shut until the 12Jan they made an afford to get me sorted after i send them a short e-mail.
i just received a LUK clutch kit...

VW show a different part number for syncro and 2WD clutch kits. Does anyone know what the difference is?

Hi Phill. According to the ETKA I have (you gave me) the kit is not available for MV, you have to buy individual components. As far as I can see the parts are the same 2wd - 4wd. There is an early part number and a late part number which does not seem to translate into the aftermarket. The only different clutch I have ever heard of is the luk h/duty (made in Canada) which apparently just causes problems. The standard clutch works so well and lasts so long I cant see any reason to faff around. 
What numbers do you have?

It looks like the release bearing is different.

088 141 165A for syncro

091 141 165D for 2WD

It would be nice to compare the two.

With conglomerates, it often happens that parts are commonized across the range, which leads to the original part number and the commonized part number being listed.  It would need a direct visual comparison to know if they are different or common.

Volkswagen don't do that. If the part number is different, then the part is different. If the part is the same then the number will be the same throughout the range. Sometimes the part will be superceeded by a part from a different model that can be used as a replacement.  e.g. MV engines had an Australia only catalytic converter. These have not been available for many years so VW just list the rest of world part.

The syncro release bearing appears to have originated from an Audi 100 hence the part number 088.

  As far as I can tell it is just a supersession. The 113 number being old beetle number and the 088 for audi? and rehashed yet again for the 091 gearbox. The one I purchased recently was the beetle part number. Classic parts only list the 088.

There would actually be a physical difference between these 3 parts but does it matter. Who knows?

Maybe the Beetle one has been upgraded or maybe the Audi one has been downgraded.

I would like to compare an original syncro, 2WD and Beetle just to see the differences.

Phil, I've mixed & matched syncro and 2 wd release bearings in the past but couldn't see any difference or feel any difference in their operation. Even had the 2wd box on my syncro for a while and worked just fine.

My guess is VW did their usual "lets raid the parts bin" and then found that the beetle part was not strong enough to operate a 228mm clutch and beefed up the bearing. You will probably not find any external differences. The fact that the beetle part is not available at classic suggests that it is superseded to the 088. Access to a dealership etka might solve it, however the only real way would probably to cut open some NOS bearings. Hardly worth the trouble for a part that gives no grief.
