Subject: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Constant knocking/tapping/clicking/slapping in the rear wheel well.

I kept this away from my other question to make response easier. Similar to the sound of stuffed CV joint, I have a klacking noise coming from the rear right wheel compartment. It is not constant in the seance of in relation to wheel turning speed like it would be topical for a cv joint. This comes only when I turn the van or drive into a curve. Maybe better discribed when the van is rolling. It started when I mounted a Telstra tow bar which I swooped for my westy one which is not legal in Australia/NSW. To stop the sound I took of all components involved with that but couldn't stop the sound from clicking ahead from then on. All parts from the towbar are back in place with new bolts and washers etc. this didn't help either. The shock, spring and bushes seem fine! Any
ideas? Thanks for the help, Jens |
I thought after getting no different sound as the opposing side that it wouldn't be the wheel Bering. It seems to have very little play, defiantly less then an inch.
How would you check your wheel bearing?

Jens,
The most common cause is CV joints. I had a similar problem with similar noises when turning. When I started to get this on straight running at times, I changed all of the CV joints. I didn’t know the CV joint history on my Syncro so decided to make a fresh start. Identifying a specific CV as the noise source can be difficult because they are rather skilled ventriloquists!
The connection with the tow bar change will be completely coincidental.

van is in the air, all 4 wheels off the ground..
drive it ..like say 30 mph ( 50 k/hr ) in 2nd gear ..
and listen with a 'listening stick' ( or stethoscope ..I prefer a 2 foot long hardwood stick myself ) to each bearing hub ..
to see how much it rumbles.
You may hear one side rumbling more , indicating tired wheel brgs there.
I have found syncro's to be very 'nebulous' about diangnosing and identifying drive train vibrations and noises at times.
Good luck !

I jacked the van up and tried to move the wheel back and forewords with the hand break disengaged of cause.
