CV Removal Tool

Does anyone know where I can get a puller to remove the front outer CV? I still have the vibration (tailshft removed) so the car is still off the road.

Any suggestions to what the vibration is? (Coming from left front at 75-80kmh) Car has done around 56k.

Phill
You screw on the nut a bit to make sure the tread won't get hurt, take
a piece of aluminum oder favourably a brass sledge on one hand and an
standard hammer in die other hand. The brass version will be held just
between CV stub axle and your right-hand hammer :) That's the way to
do it. Next time you might want to mount the CV with some copper paste
to make sure it slides in and out more easily the next-next-time :)

Have fun,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Indeed, the driveshaft removal tool as you describe it does work 100% . I did mine some weeks ago, no sweat, I used  graphite paste the previous  time and had no trouble at all taking it out. But now on another subject, : I will never instal a solid shaft into my TRISTAR DOKA simply because I owned a Type 166 Schwimmwagen for many years, which is of course a 4x4, however the 4x4 could only be engaged in first gear ,  for good reason! This  all goes back to 1943  Interesting in this context also that type 166 and type 82[ Kuebelwagen ] had self locking diffs very crude, but working ok. When leaving South Africa I sold my Type 82 to Lindsay Sakers  VW in Johannesburg . Does anybody perhaps know if they still got it?? This goes back some 27 yrs.              Gruesse von Down Under  Hartmut K.

Umm, sorry, I guess some thin kapilar active oil and a good wait will
be your best bet then. Are the CVs broken anyway? If so, you might of
course try a slightly bigger hammer :D

Sorry, no better option I guess...

There does not appear to be any rust on the splines. The CV is original from factory and has never been removed. Strangely the nut was very easy to loosen as it was only at about 20Nm.?????

Are the CVs broken anyway?

Don't know. I am trying to find out why I have a vibration at 75-80kmh. Any ideas?

Uuhh... SHOULD be 350Nm if i remember right. Loose nuts can/will kill
your wheel bearing there... also generating funny sounds on it's way
to wheel bearing hell - just had that problem. Couldn't locate the
funny sound until i simply tightend that nut again. Bearing seems to
have survived it, not funny sounds ever since.

Ok then just remove the axle from the inner side and let the CV sit
where it belongs. Or as a first test hold the axle in one hand and
turn the CV with the other to see how loose it is. Maybe you can even
hear some click-clack while turning back and forth... A healthy CV
should be pretty tight.

Good luck,

Martin

CV feels good. It has only done 54 000 kms.

Turning while driving does not increase the noise at any speed.

Phill, when taking out my originals, I can remember using a copper sledge hammer , a good two pounder and knocked it real  hard.  Hartmut

This may well not be what you are looking for, however, when you mention vibrations and that particular speed range it reminded me of this article:

The only thing is that my shaft is at home.
