Day of the Volkswagen, Victoria

The annual VW Club of Victoria Day of the Volkswagen is being held
this year on 25 November, again at the Cranbourne Racecourse.

Last year was a bit of a disappointment for the Syncro group (and a
lot of Kombi owners) because the attendance was far greater than the
VW Club had anticipated. They had allocated a small strip, bounded
by a cyclone fence and an embankment, for all the Type 2's. This
was full by 10am and there was no hope of parking as a Syncro group.

Later arrivals of all Type 2's were dispersed over a wide area.
Several Syncros arriving later were sighted but we never did know
whose they were. Unless there are better arrangements for this
year, it will be understandable if there is not a lot of interest
from our group.

I have emailed the VW Club, asking what arrangements are in place
for this year and saying that we would like to park as a distinct
group, as we have done in past years.

Make a note of the date and I will post an update when I hear back
from the VW Club.

Les
The Victorian DOTVW is on Sunday (Cranbourne Racecourse) but I haven't heard from anyone.  Nor, come to that, have I heard from the club.  I emailed them weeks ago to ask what arrangements had been made for the T2's this year but haven't had a reply.  Under the circumstances, I am not planning to go.  It is a 200 km round trip for me, which is a long way to go if it is going to turn out the same as last year.

Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Day of the Volkswagen, Victoria
That’s a shame Les, would have been good to meet you but understand completely. I’m going for a quick look around but not in my Syncro which is at home with most of the interior in pieces. I’ll say hello to any syncro owners I see.

Thanks to all re comments/offers on bumpers.

Hello Les and All,

Had been meaning to introduce myself and reply to your email re Day of
the VW from awhile back but my work schedule, life, brainspace has been
far too busy. Im renovating and extending my house(whilst working at 1
real job and 1 part time)which will be sold early next year and then
after some more modifications, tweaks, improvements and money spent on
the syncro will be off, eventually on a well earned(much delayed)trip
around Australia.
I have enjoyed reading the emails from many and have found the site to
be a wealth of knowledge and info on these fabulous vehicles.

My partner Ryoko and I will be heading out to 'Cranny' for the dotVW,
having missed it last year,so we look forward to meeting any of you
that do turn up and hope that you change your mind Les and come on down.

Cheers, Andy Sinclair.

P.S. We'll be driving the bronze one with gold lam`e wheels.
The 08 Day of the Volkswagen, Victoria, has concluded. Thanks to the
efforts of Brian Reed and Roger Bell, the Syncro display was very
successful indeed. Having a dedicated site enabled us to group 11 T3
Syncros, one honorary Syncro (Neil Smith's awesome T2) and Brian's T5
all in the one spot.

We had a prominent location and a display of videos and pictures, all
of which kept a constant stream of visitors coming past. In fact, we
were a bit short of space, which resulted in losing a couple of
Syncros into the general parking, but let's hope we collect them next
year.

T3 Attendees:
Roger Bell
Mark/Deb/Max Kofahl (NSW)
Gary/Angie Cookson and two kids
Theo and Christine Weiss
Everard Hoffman
Stuart Parry
Berndt (sorry, forgot his second name)
Mark Boys and son (dual cab)
Michael and Bill Roberts (Lockington)
Campbell Miller

T5:
Brian Reed

Awesome T2 honorary Syncro:
Neil Smith and Karen Hughes (NSW)

Many thanks to Brian and Roger for the organization and to those who
brought their Syncros. Also thanks to Andy Sinclair for rounding up
Everard Hoffman and his absolutely glorious GL Syncro Trakka.

Les
Thanks Les

We really enjoyed the day, great to meet some of the people from the list and have a look at other Syncros.

Big thank-you to Roger, Les and Brian for your organising and display efforts. My kids loved having their name badges Les.

Cheers, Gary, Ange, Ned and Patrick

Hi Folks,

The following is a report I’ll submit to the VWCV committee about the Syncro display at DotVW;-

The Syncro group display was successful, and attracted a lot of interest. It was preceded by a small ‘camp-out’ at Tooradin C.P. with the interstate visitors and 3 locals. Participants were pleased with the extra profile and prominence of the siting. Lack of space and time inhibited plans for more ‘active’ displays of vehicle (ie on ramps). Thanks go to Boris (of Volkscare) for the loan of the dome shelter, Les Harris & Roger Bell for assistance with the displays and organization, Mark Kofahl and Neil Smith for travelling from Sydney specifically for the event. They both said it was well worth the effort. Congratulations to Mark Boys as the inaugural Syncro category Show & Shine winner in his ex VW motorsport rally winning 16” double cab. Mark Kofahl was a close runner-up in his caravelle based camper. There were 11 syncro’s plus myself (T5 4motion) and Neil (‘offroad’ T2, Kombis to the Kape participant), up from about 8 last year. Plus, I think, a couple of others that escaped/didn’t fit, and were in other areas. The group is keen to maintain a distinct ‘Syncro’ (or maybe ‘off-road vans’;- my own bias) category and profile for future events.

Les, please correct me if I have the numbers wrong.

Overall, DotVW Show & Shine entries were up about 40% on last year, at 280, and it is probably the biggest VW day in the country. Maintaining a high Syncro profile would be assisted by more of our (local) syncro group members joining VWCV (http://www.vwclub.com.au/ ). At $55 per year it is not expensive, and has a number of other benefits, including several well organized weekend camp-outs through the year. While these are not 4wd expeditions, if there were enough Syncro attendees, an off-road segment could probably be added. In the future (currently, when our syncros are 25 years old) there is also the possibility of ‘club registration’ at substantial savings, for those of us who are not still using them as daily drivers.

Very good summary.

I will rejoin the club now that I can see some acceptance in the future as distinct from the marked disinterest in the recent past.  If we can encourage more Syncro_T3_Australia members to join, we will soon have a significant presence within the club.

Hi Les and all

We had a great time and really enjoyed the show and your company...

We made it back safely last night and Max travelled well...

Big thanks to Roger for his hospitality and to Les and Brian for so much work on the display - made our trip really worthwhile and enjoyable.

Have not had any time to process photos yet - has anyone else?

Regards
Mark.

Mark,

Stuart Parry moved out to make room for him, so Everard arrived early afternoon, and it was a Trakka Caravelle.  I would have to look at my pics (haven't downloaded them yet) to be sure if it was next to the dome or the next spot, which would be next to mine.

Mark Kofahl was a close runner-up in his caravelle based camper. There were 11 syncro's plus myself (T5 4motion) and Neil ('offroad' T2, Kombis to the Kape participant) , up from about 8 last year. Plus, I think, a couple of others that escaped/didn' t fit, and were in other areas. The group is keen to maintain a distinct 'Syncro' (or maybe 'off-road vans';- my own bias) category and profile for future events.

Les, please correct me if I have the numbers wrong.

Overall, DotVW Show & Shine entries were up about 40% on last year, at 280, and it is probably the biggest VW day in the country. Maintaining a high Syncro profile would be assisted by more of our (local) syncro group members joining VWCV (http://www.vwclub. com.au/ ). At $55 per year it is not expensive, and has a number of other benefits, including several well organized weekend camp-outs through the year. While these are not 4wd expeditions, if there were enough Syncro attendees, an off-road segment could probably be added. In the future (currently, when our syncros are 25 years old) there is also the possibility of 'club registration' at substantial savings, for those of us who are not still using them as daily drivers.

The 08 Day of the Volkswagen, Victoria, has concluded. Thanks to the
efforts of Brian Reed and Roger Bell, the Syncro display was very
successful indeed. Having a dedicated site enabled us to group 11 T3
Syncros, one honorary Syncro (Neil Smith's awesome T2) and Brian's T5
all in the one spot.

We had a prominent location and a display of videos and pictures, all
of which kept a constant stream of visitors coming past. In fact, we
were a bit short of space, which resulted in losing a couple of
Syncros into the general parking, but let's hope we collect them next
year.

T3 Attendees:
Roger Bell
Mark/Deb/Max Kofahl (NSW)
Gary/Angie Cookson and two kids
Theo and Christine Weiss
Everard Hoffman
Stuart Parry
Berndt (sorry, forgot his second name)
Mark Boys and son (dual cab)
Michael and Bill Roberts (Lockington)
Campbell Miller

T5:
Brian Reed

Awesome T2 honorary Syncro:
Neil Smith and Karen Hughes (NSW)

Many thanks to Brian and Roger for the organization and to those who
brought their Syncros. Also thanks to Andy Sinclair for rounding up
Everard Hoffman and his absolutely glorious GL Syncro Trakka.

Les

Hi Les

Thanks - I must have missed that or overlooked that this happened...

If anyone has any pics of the Trakka Caravelle please send them along.

Thanks
Mark.

Mark,

Stuart Parry moved out to make room for him, so Everard arrived early afternoon, and it was a Trakka Caravelle.  I would have to look at my pics (haven't downloaded them yet) to be sure if it was next to the dome or the next spot, which would be next to mine.

Brian,

Very good summary.

I will rejoin the club now that I can see some acceptance in the future as distinct from the marked disinterest in the recent past.  If we can encourage more Syncro_T3_Australia members to join, we will soon have a significant presence within the club.

We have a new group member, Everard Hoffman, who has the most amazing GL Trakka Syncro, a vehicle that would be very hard to beat at the next Show and Shine!

As a matter of interest, does anyone know how many vehicles came through the gate in total?  The attendance rate of VW's seems to go up significantly each year.

Les

Hi Folks,

The following is a report I'll submit to the VWCV committee about the Syncro display at DotVW;-

The Syncro group display was successful, and attracted a lot of interest. It was preceded by a small 'camp-out' at Tooradin C.P. with the interstate visitors and 3 locals. Participants were pleased with the extra profile and prominence of the siting. Lack of space and time inhibited plans for more 'active' displays of vehicle (ie on ramps). Thanks go to Boris (of Volkscare) for the loan of the dome shelter, Les Harris & Roger Bell for assistance with the displays and organization, Mark Kofahl and Neil Smith for travelling from Sydney specifically for the event. What's a Trakka Caravelle?
Phil - Les says that Everard brought a "GL Trakka" which he clarified to be a Caravelle GL, converted to a camper, I assume, by Trakka.

Do you know if Trakka ever converted Caravelles?

Trakka would convert anything. Bit of a waste of a Caravelle!
Phill,

If it wasn't a Caravelle Syncro with the Trakka conversion, I need a clarification of terms.  I have seen several top level 4WD vehicles that I thought were Caravelles.  Certainly, they appeared to have all the fittings of the 2WD Caravelles.  The VW dealer in Hawthorn sold a lot of the top level vehicles in both aircooled and watercooled, some of which are still in the area.

What's a Trakka Caravelle?

Not too much of a waster, apart from the seating I guess. We very much enjoy the Caravelle fitout, quietness and refinement of our Caravelle Camper.

Les,
It could have been a Caravelle. Just a waste as they were around $10k dearer and then you would throw away most of the Caravelle stuff.

Gday Mark,

Obviously you mean a Caravelle Trakka ... vehicle designation should
come first, conversion last.

In my view, no one can truly appreciate the refinements a Caravelle
Trakka offers unless they own one.

Cheers.
