de-coupler group buy

hi all,

some of you may have recieved an email directly about this, for all of you who
haven't, for the last year or so there has been discussion about a group purchase of
drive shaft de couplers.
I don't want to start a disscussion on the pros and cons, just let the people who want
to buy one know that the time has come to order. The discount will be around 15%.

Please respond asap as we want to order this friday the 20th August.

Steve

Dear Steve,
Thanks for your posting. Do you have an indicative price recognising that exchange rates, shipping costs will make it a bit rubbery. Also are you able to point me(us) the best web resume on the pro & cons of a  de-coupler?
Cheers
Roger

Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! Movies.

Steve. I have been in contact with Matti re  de-couple and have put my name forward for one. However are the benefits the same for a T3 Syncro without any diff locks like mine, and can it be fitted the same like any other Syncro with  either or both front and/or rear/ diff locks.
I somehow got the feeling it may be trickier and perhaps more costly to do so. Please advise !

…..The answer is in fact YES it is more expensive due to the fact that , if you don’t have diff locks, then you don’t have the Vacuum reservoir or the associated facia plate on the centre consul …or the vacuum lines etc…..It can be done but it costs $....but its still worth it…. These decouplers are great..I should have done it years ago!!  As for the benefits of one with locks over one with out…..The same…

No…Its definitely vac operated.  The gear box does not have to be removed…its very simple if you have a hoist…about 1 hr job plus what ever time it takes you to do the vac lines and wiring …2 hrs in total.

Thanks Ken and Phill..........for the info regarding the de-coupler for my non diff lock Syncro. I'm not mechanically  gifted enough to perform an op like this.,will a reputable VW mechanic be able to perform this op competently without it becoming an epic of Ben Hur proportions and costing  me an arm and a leg on top of  the de-coupler. Would they or myself have to order in other parts to complete
the installation prior to the job. Sorry to be so pedantic but I don't wish to be lumbered with a de-coupler that can't be installed correctly.

Yes, you're right it is vac operated. The bowden cable runs from the
knob on the dash to a vac valve on the nose of the gearbox which
operates the engaging mechanism. I didn't look at the gearbox end. It
also engages automatically when G gear is selected.

I think that for retrofitting a full vacuum system would be cheaper
and easier.

Michael,  Yes any VW workshop should be able to fit the decoupler….DONT FORGET THE CIRCLIP that goes  on after the little gear that slides on to the output shaft in the gearbox…most important. As for the vac lines and reservoir…well these can be purchased through VW…Oh actually the vac lines come with the decplr’…so you need the  Vac’Res and faceplate…not sure of cost…but faceplate not cheap.  It definitely could be done but at a price…You can ph me if you like to get more detail…and part No’s

Thinking about it you will still need 1 x vac line…from Res to dash.  It may sound complex but its v simple once you look at it.

Regards..

Isn't the decoupler cable operated? Unlike the diff locks.

Phill   not sure that your correct there…Im quite sure its Vac from dash to Decplr   …mine is   I remember reading old VW notes that the cable was the original trial method??...dont rely on a microfish or EKTA  as I think they show the cable system.  I may be wrong here…but I think im right.  The decuplr’s your ordering…are they the European ones or the USA ones??  Europear ones have the needle roller bearing on the shaft. USA ones don’t.

Yes, you're right it is vac operated. The bowden cable runs from the
knob on the dash to a vac valve on the nose of the gearbox which
operates the engaging mechanism. I didn't look at the gearbox end. It
also engages automatically when G gear is selected.

I think that for retrofitting a full vacuum system would be cheaper
and easier.

Phill

I'm talking factory fitted which is very rare. They were only fitted
to a few trail vehicles from the Swedish(?) army. All others were
fitted aftermarket as it was not available as a general option.
(Information from Graz.)

How about using some bits from a Range Rover? (Dash valve)

The diff locks are vacuum operated and the "switch" on the dashboard is actually a valve operated by a push/pull knob.  Refer to page 34.24 in Bentleys.

In respect of the decoupler currently under discussion, if it is the Bernt Jaeger decoupler, it uses the same vacuum "switch" and vacuum lines as the difflocks do.  Photos of this decoupler appear on his website.

Phill   not sure that your correct there…Im quite sure its Vac from dash to Decplr’   …mine is   I remember reading old VW notes that the cable was the original trial method??...dont rely on a microfish or EKTA  as I think they show the cable system.

I think that for retrofitting a full vacuum system would be cheaper
and easier.

I am talking of the factory system not aftermarket. Diff locks are
vacuum and decoupler cable/vacuum. I have the factory manuals. Berndt
Jaeger uses full vacuum as it is easier and cheaper (and sensible).

I am curious as to where the decouplers are going to be sourced from.
Does anyone
know?

I am also positive the decoupler is completely vacuum operated. The
confusion arises
because there was also a power-takeoff (don't know what it would have
been used for,
hydraulics for snow-ploughs??) which was cable operated, and diagrams
for this appear
in ETKA.

At this moment I am in the process of installing an SDP (ie original)
style decoupler on
my Syncro. This came out of Germany. It's supposed to be a direct
fit, but I am having a
big problem installing the gear on the output shaft. It looks like
I'll have to modify it with
a hone stone or something to get some more clearance for it to fit on
as smoothly as the
connecting sleeve does. It wasn't cheap and to say I'm disappointed
is an
understatement. I don't know why someone like Albins doesn't try and
produce a
decoupler and make themselves a killing â€" there's a ready
market for them globally.

Not having the vacuum system on a van will certainly complicate the
fitting of a
decoupler. Hopefully the wiring side is still there though? By the
way, the face plate with
the diagram of the van wheels and lights is called a fibre-optic,
although it has
absolutely nothing to do with fibre optics.

One advantage of having a functional decoupler that I can see is that
the van can be put
into 2-w-d when it goes in for a Warrant of Fitness (don't know what
you call it in Oz)
and then go through the brake test stands without any worries. And it
just good to have
the choice of decoupling or not depending on the weather or whatever
and reduce strain
on the transmission. I used to have a hard time doing three-point
turns while parking
until I pulled the driveshaft (dud VC I guess).

Even with a decoupler I don't think it would be advisable to tow the
van with the front
raised. The oil will drain away from the needle-roller bearing in the
decoupler because of
the elevated angle, and the shaft will be spinning really fast in the
bearing, which could
cause it to wear out quickly. Sound logical?

Just some thoughts, not trying to start the debate.

Hi all,

the decoupler we are ordering is from Bernd Jaeger, made in Germany, it has the
needle roller bearing, I feel this is a better option than a plain bearing even if it is
only a belt and braces measure, as there has only been limited real world testing of
the two versions it is difficult to say which is better.

As for problems fitting it, I've not seen any other reports on the USA or Sth. African
news groups of problems fitting them, any mechanic should be able to fit it, and any
competent home mechanic shouild also be able to fit it, I for one will be doing the
fitting on my own van.

It is vacum opperated, using readily available diff lock parts plus a few key
components that reproduced from the orriginal drawings, the original cable / vacum
set up is very rare and nearly all of the components are no longer available.

It is possible to purchase the parts as a kit from Sth Africa if you can find the source.

Any one with enough time and engineering knowledge could easily produce the
missing parts to create thier own decoupler. I don't have have either so my only
option is to pay the asking price, this group purchase makes it alittle less of a
financial stress.

Currently I'm driving my Syncro with the center drive shaft removed due to an
agressive VC, so I can't wait to get it installed, along with the diff locked G-box that is
currently being rebuilt.

I have only heard good reports on the Bernd Jaeger decoupler. Most of
his products have been tested in the Sahara and North Africa. A
friend of mine from Hamburg has had one in his syncro 16" for a few
years and has travelled for 3 months in Australia and 3 months in
Canada with no problems. Even if the decoupler failed the car would
probably be driveable.

I have fitted the US decoupler to my Syncro, using the
instructions provided, which I can post if people wish.
This was an easy job - unbolt driveshaft, remove rear housing, fit
new housing with decoupler, run vacuum lines and wiring - 4
hours approx. I did not use a reservoir, ran straight from the
actuator to the dash valve and vacuum feed off the manifold. As
long as the engine is running, I can operate the decoupler.

I am convinced that the SDP decouplers are all made by the one outfit in Germany
somewhere. Why this company doesn't market them themselves and cut out the
middlemen is a mystery to me. It's easy enough to do these days thanks to the
Internet.

Incidentally, it's interesting you've chosen to go with Bernd Jaeger when the same
decoupler could be bought cheaper (1280 euros compared to 975) from Meiers,
www.busschmiede.de, in Germany. See this link:

Personally I've found correspondence quite difficult with Jaeger, but this crowd seem
to be "on the ball".

[Syncro_T3_Australia] Re: de-coupler group buy
Hi ,

We've had no problems with dealing with Bernd Jaeger, Matti, who is corresponding with Bernd speaks German, so the is no language problem. We like Bernd's enthusiasm for the Syncro and want to support an enthusiast and have only read good feed back about his product.

The price Matti has negotiated is cheaper than Meiers advertised price and our price includes shipping plus if we return the old housing we will get ¤ 100. back .

thanks ,

Steve
