Personally I have ATE57 (Audi 100/A6 C4 e.g. '96) on 288x25 vented in
front and Girling/Lucas38 (Golf 3 '97) on 245x10 non-vented in the
rear. This setup even fits under my 15" (with 30x9.5R15) rims, which
was very important. I don't want 16", I want as much rubber under my
a** as possible :) I guess the cheapest and easiest option would be
that G60 brake. You can buy a complete set at smallcar in the US. I
wouldn't recommend the SA setup for traveling around the world i
guess, as these parts are much harder to find than those standard Audi/
VW parts. Even though the actual caliper on the SA brake is supposed
to be an ATE FN60 used on several Ford (XR3i up to '98) and the disk
can be replaced by some Audi model (Audi 80 Quattro/ Audi S2)......
Anyway, my setup can also be bought in Germany from Raimund Feussner
(ray [at] v6bus.de), who is selling the complete setup with adapter
plates, all screws and every part from calipers to discs brand new for
around 1850 EUR. Smallcars setup for front (
http://smallcar.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=18
) and rear (
http://smallcar.com/index.php?
act=viewProd&productId=71 ) will be around US$ 1400.
There are numerous other brake upgrade options, ranging from Porsche,
to Mercedes and Ford. I would recommend to take something from the
Audi/VW toolboxes and not start that crazy mix vanagon - at least if
you're going to travel.
About vented discs: Some people over here don't recommend vented discs
as they will be full of mud after plunging into some muddy lake. They
see the discs rust away in no time. I can't support this argument, in
my opinion the discs will be worn out earlier than they rust away -
maybe there is local experience on that matter? The solution for these
people over here is easy: Front stays stock, rear gets upgraded to
245x10 discs, which gets the drum out of the way. They obviously do
not need better brakes, that just want to get rid of the drum. I
personally also want larger AND vented discs in front, as this is the
only way to keep a heavy bus on the road in summer time somewhere in
the mountains.
Something "cheap" that helps all setups: Change your brake booster in
front vom 8" to 10". That of course doesn't make the brake any better,
but it's certainly the easiest way to make it feel better. No, MUCH
better. You can fit a whole line of BMW E30 brake boosters in there,
which can - at least over here - be bought on ebay for close to
nothing. The exact models would be (posted by someone on some maling
list - NOT my know how here! [I'm using one, though :)]:
"The BMW part number is 34331157416 and it can be found in these models:
