Driveline whine

Hi Everone,
My Syncro had a driveline noise (whine) on deceleration.
I removed the driveshaft and the noise disappeared.
Front diff source of noise?
If so, would changing the diff oil help?
I have a 2001 Honda HRV and changing the rear diff oil cured rear diff noise.

Cheers,

Bruce. SA

Bruce,
of late noticed a whining noise when in all wheel drive , it disappeared when disengaging the front. so I guess it's been the front. Took the box out (easy job, phew) and Ron of Kempsey confirmed my concerns. He took the box apart in my presents, he has all bearings and seals in stock and I can pick up the front diff at the week end. The minor abrasion on the pinion he will polish out.

Thanks Hartmut,
Thought that might be the case. Wondering whether an oil change might quieten it?

Bruce, try and change the oil, if it's not gone you can save the oil for later.
Will refit my diff on Friday and let you know how it goes. On dimantling we found that the diff had only 2 spider gears although the casting is the same as in the rear except the holes for the additional spiders have not been drilled.....
interesting concept. Anybody has experienced this ?????? Greg ??????

Bruce , make sure your tyres are all the same and similar tread depth. Also you might try some Nulon gear additive. Eddie.

For the benefit of newer members, they tyres MUST kept be within a few percent of each other all round in terms of rolling radius.  If they are not, the front diff can be under permanent load with consequent accelerated wear on the front diff.

Technical information on how to measure this is in the files section.  Note that it is more than a matter of tread depth.

Les

Hi Hart. I don't have a lot of experience with the front diffs but I believe that is the correct diff housing.  I guess there is less load on the front diff. Interestingly not all rear diffs have the four spider gears. For example the 6P non locker has two and the 6pa locker has four. How's the engine coming along Hart. Is she getting a few more ponies? Hart, my 6p non locker box had two spider gears until they broke and were replaced with the Albins diff with 4 spider gears. Strange thing is, that my 92 2wd had a 4 spider gear diff in it. Eddie.

Bruce, No harm in draining the oil, mostly to see what's on the magnet. If you refill and  still have a noise you've only wasted some oil.  My gut feeling is that if you have an audible noise I would be pulling it and crossing my fingers it is just bearings. Greg E

Thanks Greg, Hartmut, Eddie & Les,
Will maybe change the oil and see what happens. At 260k km might be a good idea to include the front diff in the trans rebuild when the time comes. Will be fitting a decoupler eventually.

Picked mine up a few hrs ago,  4 bearings ( the big one $375 ) 2 seals, 2 thrust washers, 1 spider shaft, should be good and quiet now.

Very interesting Eddie, by 92 VW possibly had found out that it was a good idea to fit 4spiders.
If it should happen to anyone out there please google , weddle, and check out the diff they are producing for our Syncros. Btw Albins is closely working together with Weddle, the # 1 off road
Gearbox manufacturer in the US.
