ECU help please

PLease if you have any ideas any, on this problem get back to me.
SOMETHING SEEMS to be shorting out the ECU in my 1992 syncro.
Have just replaced an ECU last week and now this one is doing the same
thing as last coughing, sputterring,no power then goes sometimes.
the only thing that has happened is a lot of rain and i did wash off
under the car with a hose and up under the engine, not super pressure
at all. I have done this before and there hasnt seem to be a problem,
but im searchingfor any kind of reason.
Mech says something is destroying the ECU like a short or something
and that super big job to replace wiring harness, so he's talking
wrecking it OUCH! OUCH! Dont really want to and cant really afford to
if anyone out there can help I would really appreciate it.
You all have been so good in the past THANKS HEAPS

I really doubt the the ECU is your problem. The problem may be your mechanic. Mechanics are not in the electrical trade.

When are you getting the problems?
Hot?
Cold?
After driving on expressways?
etc

Phill

PS Check the earth on the ECU.
Robert, I had a similar problem and it was the spark plugs. The plugs looked fine when I pulled them out, replaced them anyway, problem solved. Are you into multihulls as well? Paul.

Robert,

Slow down!!  There are a whole lot of things that could be amiss before you get to the ECU.  It pays to go through a lot of the basics before you can be sure that the ECU is the problem.  If you have just replaced the ECU, this tends to suggest that the fault is more likely to be elsewhere.  In the olden days (pre electronic management), coughing and spluttering suggested ignition or fuel supply.  This is still a good place to start looking.  There is one specific ECU issue to be looked at, particularly after hosing the engine bay, and that is assuring that the earth connections are earthing properly.  Make sure that all earth paths are clean.  A bit of petroleum jelly helps to keep them that way.  The harness between the ECU and the engine is a remote possibility, but leave that until you have thoroughly investigated the basics.  Forget wrecking it.  That is not an option.

Should have added that a good earth is bright metal to bright metal with petroleum jelly to keep the surfaces from corroding and becoming a poor earth connection again.

Firstly, what State do you live in? I couldn't find your name in the
archive. Surely someone on the list with a bit of a technical savvy
could take a look. I have experienced similar problems with faulty /
poor connection in O2 sensor (disconnect before starting- wire under
coil coming from Cat converter. Secondly dirty contacts / water in Air
flow meter will give similar results. If you are not sure where all of
the earth contacts are, just ask the list members.
thanx NIck
i live in Qld sunshine coast
new to this maybe thats why not sure
replaced 02 sensor few months back
thinking of replaccing airflow meter now
thanx heaps for your ideas really appreciated

Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

I have heard of people trying to start their engine with wet ignition leads. Car backfires and destroys AFM. Common problem.

Have you checked your throttle position switch?
