Hi Michael,
Always follow Les’ advice, simple, take the .38 from under the bed and shoot the bloody screen. All fixed then....
I had a SYN day today , getting a blue slip for the Bronco Trakka . Went all well and cost $ 54.—plus some beers. Only the weighing ($50,--) process gave me some headaches, I took From spare to engine cover everything out I could find, incl of fridge, stove unit, carpets etc and guess what........it still weight in at 1800 ks...shocking, find out tomorrow what I’m up for road tax...
And btw I love my WBX , a great engine, and for pushrods, great to have those, after all it puts us on par with modern aircraft engines which are designed for safety and endurance.
Love the forum!! Hartmut alas Hartis or just Hart

them are based on designs from the '30's, or about the same time as the
forebears of the wbx appeared. The low volume of production seems to
preclude much design innovation.
One might be surprised to see how many Certified aircraft engines are
passed over, or replaced, in favor of the Subaru in Experimental Class
aircraft, at least here in the States. In fact, Subaru got its start in
aircraft!

Hi Larry H.
Isn’t it just great that we are living in a society where we all can express ourselves to our beliefs, knowledge and experiences....
And yes you are of course partially right when you refer to the dinosaur engines of the 30s, although Conti and Lycoming received huge handouts to modernize their products and have done so.
But despite that, certain design parameters have survived because they are critical to engine life and safety.
To mention just one modern new engine on the market, it is the Rotax 912 Series which has taken over the aviation world by storm, designed in Austria, built by Bombardier in Canada, it is now used the World over, fully certified to be used for instructional use or passenger carrying, relying on pushrods, it is also available in twin engine production a/c.
And yes, I too believe that Subi engines are excellent in cars and that includes Syncros, it’s the owners choice that counts, my choice of propellant is WBX or 1.9 TDI in my Syncro and pushrod flat 4 in my aeroplane (it’s actually a t1 2ltr 80hp Limbach eng.)

I'm sorry to see "modern aircraft engines" used as a standard.
Most of
them are based on designs from the '30's, or about the same time as the
forebears of the wbx appeared. The low volume of production seems to
preclude much design innovation.

The Rotax is indeed a fine engine, although I'd prefer one of your
Jabirus if the Subaru in my Quickie Q2 ever dies. The prices of those
Certified engines are just out of my league however, when the Soob is
but a few thousand $ in aircraft trim.
The TDI is also high on my list, and since my Syncro is ex-diesel, it
would have been an excellent fit. I'm sure it would have been superb,
particularly offroad.
IMO, any of the modern conversion engines offering increased horsepower,
simpler maintenance, and better parts availability, simply move the T3
to a new level. They provide a suitable match to the Transporter's
superb chassis, as evidenced by VWSA's switch to the Audi 5 cylinder OHC
engines.
My preference in a conversion engine is one that looks like it belongs
there, i.e., a water-cooled boxer, but from Japan.
