front locking diff

I am looking at replacing my front diff (non locking 6N) with a locking unit in a quest to
get more traction as neither of my diffs lock and replacing the front unit is a cheaper
alternative. Literature says the correct replacement is the ADM diff but can someone with
EKTA please tell me weather an AHU is suitable. What is the difference? Is it only the
speedo gear drive ratio ? (as I think ADM is meant for 16" wheels). Will it fit ?
Any other recommendations ?

Cannot find AHU. Could it be ACU? Or AHA?

The copies of ETKA detailing the internal componentry of the front diffs list 16 different model numbers in the right hand column: 6N,ACU,AHT,ADM,ADH,AHU,AKH,AKF,AOL,ANB,ANC,AOM,AAM,AHB,ALM,ALN. These are then divided into various categories depending on wether they have a diff lock or not,  the ratio of the R&P and the size of tyres on the vehicle they are designed for. My only concern is why the other literature I have (may have been taken from Bentley , I'm not sure) only lists 4 types :6N,ADM,ACU,ADH. Are the others available in other parts of the world ? Are these 4 types only Australia/America specific?

I mentioned the AHU as it is locking and has the same size R+P. Theoretically it should be interchangeable.

More info please.

nick,

i've just uploaded two files to the "files-section" of the t3 newsgroup. one is called "gearboxes used in the t3" and is a collection of german origin.
according to that list:

6N is a non-locker with 5:43 ratio
ADM is a lcoker with 5:43 ratio as well, should fit in then
AHU is missing in that list, but according to logic would fit between AHB and ALM. and if correct so, with a ratio of 5:43 as well, should fit too. BUT AHU is a
        non-locker.

ADM was not meant for 16" only, according to that list.

other recommendations:
we have a front locking version, but have to admit, that we hardly use it. that's because when front locker is engaged, no steering is possible (personal experience and written in the manual). in difficult terrain usage of the front locker is a game with a bit of risk...

please see our other mail too

phil,

ACU is a front diff, whereas AHA is a gearbox for the back
AHU explained in the mail before

Bentley shows US market only.

Inner CVs are larger on 16" syncros.
nick,

have just been comparing your and my list.

you have AHT, ADH, AHU, AOL, ALN...which are not on my list.

i have AOH, ADN, AIN, AAL, which are not on your list.

as you said in your last sentence AHU is a locker. my mail of yesterday assumed that the missing gearbox in my list could be AHU. but it's not, because my list misses a non-locker. sorry for the wrong assuming... i would very much like to have a copy of your list. maybe i can figure out why the lists are different (some gearboxes only used in australia/others only in germany?)

thank you
