Fuel gauge fault

My fuel gauge has stopped reading correctly.

I filled it up (made sure it was fill) and the gauge reads under 3/4 fill

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this?  sender unit, gauge something else?

Same here Richo, bought a new sender in € but as they forgot to sell me gaskets and I had a look how hard it is to change the thing, i gotten used
to check by odometer.....

Hi Hart,

That is what I am thinking I'll need to do... maybe you could help and give me an idea of how far I am likely to get on a tank of fuel?  since I haven't had a chance to find out myself yet :) .

How much fuel did you get in?

They take 70L all up (60L tank and 10L reserve).

They are notoriously hard to fill - they like being on a certain angle to work properly.

I had to get used to it too.

Cheers,

Skot

70L tank, so ~65L usable. Normal you can expect ~8.5km/L so ~550km on a tank depending on engine tune and how/where you drive.

Gauge not getting full range can often be the sender (resistance wire either worn or slipping back). If this is the case, you will find it's still a good indicator at the low end. Just depends how/where the damage is. It is worth checking the simple external cable at the sender etc is sound and not badly corroded.

Replacing the sender is a daunting task, but having done mine not that long ago, not so daunting the next time.

If you do want to replace the sender, make sure you get both seals (one inside the tank, one outside) and it's worth getting the after market stainless plates.

Also make sure you replace the return hose inside the tank, it will be perished and crumbles at the slightest touch if it's original. Make sure you get it out intact!

I have not played with the dash end, so not sure what you can check for on that end.
