Built by elves in the same Black Forest Austrian factory as our Syncros. The latest military version has just been delivered to our defence forces including a 6 x 4 version which should be fairly capable. Apparently we will have to wait 30 years to find them on the Army equipment disposal market by which time I will have at least lost my mind, teeth and place on the waiting list. The military version is not apparently identical to the civilian one. (surprise surprise.) My brother had a 1980's non turbo diesel version for a while which he reckoned was fantastic off road but struggled to do 100kph onroad. It was extremely heavy. He was also on the Canning Track fairly recently when a publicity group of the reintroduced current version came thundering past only to be stopped whilst they had new shock absorbers flown in. I think the subsequent announcement said they found oil filled shockers more suitable for our
conditions than gas. When I was in London last year all black AMG versions with deeply tinted glass seemed popular with people to park outside Harrods but would be deeply shocked if you suggested getting them dirty.
If people are interested in googling there is quite a bit more information and even videos available, but this will get you started.
Wonder which of our Syncros could give the G wagon in Ken's article a run for its money on longivity?
