Hi All,

Just in case anyone else comes across this one, I have found an interesting article on the "Flashing Oil Light and Buzzer Syndrome on Vanagon 86-91"

http://www.vanagain.com/buzzer2.htm

Another syndrome that affects the vanagon apparently.

So hopefully this is just electrical, though it is possible that my engine is getting too long in the tooth.

Hi Ken,
We pull the heads of our engine about every 150K to have a look at the valves and replace o-ring and stuff.  we have found that after that you can get pressure leaking into the cooling system.  I have to say most of our running is on LPG so the valves are something we watch.  The bottom ends are normally good however the cams can wear.  If your getting upto 250K I'd say that you have had a pretty good run.

Hold it right there, Sam, so far mine has done 4o5 000 km and only now is starting to use some oil, say ¾ ltr per 1000 km. I wouldn’t worry too much. Even the Russians and Polish are in love with the 2.1 WBX and that’s poss why there are so few left in old Germany. Sam, also ask Ken about the treatment mine had to endure ,Always loaded to the max ,like 2 by 300 kg each round bales on the Tristar and 3 on the dual axle trailer, going up the muddy paddock engaging the rear lock n full flight, which answers with such an enormous bang that I thought for a moment the g/box had exploded...................

Those were the days (years) of total mis/abuse. Maybe it’s time to write down a few of those experiences...... Ciao Hartis

Sam,
I was told soon after I bought my syncro by a local VW service mechanic that in his opinion, a WBX motor was good for 250,000 klms, after which an overhaul is most likely due. Now I can't say one way or the other as to the veracity of this opinion. Anyone else think this is a pretty reasonable ballpark mileage for a WBX prior to overhaul?

Hold it right there Hartmut, :-)

Owners manual states engine oil consumption can be up to 1.5 litres per 1000klm. And that's from new!
And under arduous conditions i.e., Hartmut Kiehn Tristar abuse for 20 years ... even more so and check oil level daily! ... haha

Sam, don't trust this man. :-)

Sam, also ask Ken about the treatment  mine had to endure ,Always loaded to the max ,like 2 by 300 kg each round bales on the Tristar and 3 on the dual axle trailer, going up the muddy paddock engaging the rear lock n full flight, which answers with such an enormous bang that I thought for a moment the g/box had exploded.... ......... ......

Those were the days (years) of total mis/abuse. Maybe it’s time to write down a few of those experiences. ..... Ciao Hartis

Hi folks,

for what it's worth I'm at 280 kms and losing compression.
Maybe a small loss in power but otherwise no oil or water problems.

Still ruminating over the choice to rebuild or stick a 2.5 subaru
in the van.

Anyone out there been down the subaru route ?
Suggestions for conversion parts vendors, engine etc

Mark

I have to say most of our running is on LPG so the valves are something we watch. The bottom ends are normally good however the cams can wear. If your getting upto 250K I'd say that you have had a pretty good run.

Now I can't say one way or the other as to the veracity of this opinion. Anyone else think this is a pretty reasonable ballpark mileage for a WBX prior to overhaul?

Hi Mark

I installed a 2.2 1996 Subaru Liberty Engine into my Syncro. I wonder why I didn't do it years ago. The extra power transforms the driving experience and I have even pulled away from a Landcruiser going uphill!
Cost for engine was $2000. Cost of adapter plate $600. Cost of my labour...incalculable!
This website is very good:
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/subaruvanagon/

One day I will write out my experience...
but the most important thing to remember is to make sure the engine, wiring harness and ECU come from the same car (hopefully going).

Any Q's don't hesitate to contact me direct.

Regards

Peter
