FW: Your Vehicle

I asked the touring Mark Thornley about his vehicle because it had no Syncro badges on it and none of the photos showed the telltale fuel filler location.  Here’s his reply.

Definitely a Syncro.  We found one or two internet comments on border crossinings where people had been chanrged more because they were driving a 4wd so removed the syncro and 4wd transfers to avoid this - it then looks like an ordinary van to most people.

Mark,

Your blog has drawn some interest here and the question has arisen – are you driving a 2WD or a Syncro?

Attached is my registration form for the Syncro_T3_Australia group.

I have to appologise for not keeping the group informed of my overland trip from the UK to Oz which I posted about a few months ago and received some helpful advice from other members, but there were so many things to do at the last minute that I left home without even my Yahoo Group password.

The only e:mail address I had was for Phill Lander, but as the e:mail on my mobile comes from my company e:mail  address, I guess it was blocked before he received it.

In short, we left on 1st July as planned, and are now in Xian, China .  The Syncro is going well, with only one irritating problem that reoccured a few times but I think I have now sorted.  I am updating a blog site (www.overlandtoaus.blogspot.com) which other members of the group may be interested in. It's a very basic blog, and the "Where are we" map didn't get sorted before we left so I'm posting Lat and Long each day.

If you could post a message on my behalf on the site, I would be grateful, or alternatively I could set myself up a new yahoogroup ID and ask to join the group again.

Many thanks

Mark

Well I'll be. Could have fooled me. That petrol filler hole is definitely what  I have come to believe as a 2wd T3/T25. Must be a unique vehicle as all the syncro's I've seen on American and Euro sites have the filler at the rear.Go figure????
Anyway what a great adventure. Good luck to them
Regards

Michael

Syncro Dokas have their filler holes in the middle. Syncros with spare tanks use the 2wd spot for their second filler hole.

Michael,

The Syncro tank has to be at the rear because otherwise the prop shaft would go through the middle of the forward 2WD tank.  Some camper conversions add a filler hole behind the RH front door for under-floor tanks.  I have also seen pictures of what looks like a filler cap on the LH side behind the door and have assumed that this was also an aftermarket filler for an under-floor tank.

Has anyone got a reliable list of model nomenclature as used around the world?  I had thought that the T25 was 2WD but might have that wrong.

Mark Thornley's vehicle does not have the 2WD Front RH filler so I assumed that it would have the 4WD rear filler even though you can't see it behind the folded back spare wheel?

Ralph,

Appears so.

I actually went outside and looked at my Syncro to try to judge if the filler would be visible or not.  Since we now know that it is a Syncro, the filler must be hidden behind the wheel carrier by no more than a poofteenth.

Mark,

You are going to have to include a RH side pic of your vehicle to show me how wrong I was!

Sorry about the confusion I seem to have caused by the angle of the pictures on the blog site. My Syncro is very standard with the rear fuel filler.

At present I can't even see my own blog as China blocks lots of sites including blogspot.com, but as soon as we reach Laos I'll upload some more pictures.
