Gaerbox Parts

I have been through several agonizing days while Volkspower has been searching the world for parts to rebuild my gearbox.

The most worrying item is a new crownwheel and pinion.

Guess what!  The 5.43 crownwheel and pinion is NO LONGER AVAILABLE from VAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This does not bode well for our future but, fortunately, there is an alternative.  Albins will make them for about $1400 - the VAG price is $1879.  Albins make gears for off road racing vehicles using VW and Porsche gearboxes, and just about their total production goes to the US.  The reputation of their gears is about s good as it gets.  Because they are a local firm, we can buy direct from Albins while the rest of the world can buy only from their appointed distributor for the rest of the world.

Fortunately for me, they found one in Singapore and it is now on its way here.

Oh yes, and there are several bearings that are NLA as well, but it should be possible to get suitable matches.  (Thank you, VAG, for your ongoing support.)

Hi Les

Thanks for keeping us up to date on progress, every day I think I hear a new grumble form my box and start worrying...

Sounds like you have it under control but here is a link to a US based company that rebuild and supply parts for syncro transmissions. Their name comes up on US based sites with postive comments.

Gary,

There are probably some suppliers of non-genuine parts around the world but quality is often a big question mark.  Volkspower used a non genuine crownwheel and pinion in a box (due to short supply of genuine) and it lasted just six months.  It cost them a bundle because it was still under warranty and they had to build the box from scratch again, this time using a genuine C/P.

I would be more than happy to use an Albins C/P but they haven't made one in that ratio so far, so they don't exist yet.  Given that the difference between genuine and non genuine isn't a huge amount and given that rebuilding a box is in any event very expensive, the temptation to save a few dollars could be a lot more than it is worth in the future.

I wonder who made the dodgy C&P that Volkspower sourced, can’t imagine there are too many people manufacturing them.

What caused your original C&P to be u/s? Is it the failure of the pinion bearing that then chews up the teeth?

Can you change the ratio slightly in your box in order to get a genuine item a bit sooner? Did you decide to change ratios at all in the end?

Gary,

I had a long talk with Mike Baker, who is rebuilding the box.  He finds that it has been out before, that the roll pin in the diff lock yoke has been butchered (which would explain a few other things) but my key question was what happened to the C/P.  His opinion was that it had been assembled with too much preload, which loaded up everything else.  He bases this on the wear on the teeth being typical of too much preload.

He has an interesting view on oil, based on his thirty years of building boxes, including desert racing boxes.  He tends towards non-synthetic being ultimately better because of the cushioning effect and sees proof in wear rates in T2 and T3 boxes as supporting this.

I decided against changing third and fourth ratios based on the graphs that I constructed.  For my use and a standard MV engine, I will stay with the standard ratios.  The only more readily available C/P will be the 4.86, which was fitted in the US but not in Australia.  And bear in mind that you have to change both front and back.

I don't know where the dodgy C/P came from but will ask.

Of course! I wasn’t thinking about having to change front and rear. I’m so used to running around in 2wd until I get my propshaft and vc issues sorted I forgot about the front C&P!

That’s very interesting regarding the non-synthetic oil, so what are you planning to put in yours?

I guess you are set for another 200k once it is done though, you’ll be replacing the MV with a hydrogen fuel cell before you need to worry about the box again!

I am going to check with one other person on the selection of oil before I decide

Fuel cells have a fair way to go before they are an economical proposition, so I hope that the MV keeps going the way it is now.

I will have another talk with Albins soon and see if I can get them to get started on the 5.43 C/P as an insurance for all of us into the future

Pete,

The ex-Telecom vans were the same 5.43 diff ratio.

I might be wrong on this but I think that the crown wheel is the same on both lock and non-lock.  I will have a look at ETKA tonight.  If it is the same part number for both, it will be the same crown wheel for both.

I wonder if it really is no longer available?????????

I have just ordered a thermostat housing in England that is no longer available.

Sometimes they say NLA because Singapore does not have it. (Sometimes it is really NLA.)

You really have to check. What do South Africa have? Some places will have NOS.

Phill,

So far, I have left it to Volkspower, who deal with world-wide suppliers on a weekly basis.  If they are having a problem, I would have the same problem X 10.  However, I am making some enquiries on the world Syncro sites.

Gday Pete,

ETKA lists Part no. 094 517 143 F for both 6P and 6PA transmissions, so
rest easy.

Cheers.

Gday Pete,

erm .... bit scared now Pete to exit the garage. Third parties suggest
my brakes are cactus, I drive too fast downhill offroad and I'm
petrified now about my C&P. I expect you can confirm/deny all that eh.

Rumour has it the price of fuel may drop in 6 or 12 months time or so
and you can then afford to drive down here in your 2WD Telstra and
luxuriate once again behind the wheel of my modded hack.

Then again, get yours modded too and I'll organise a local syncro Tour
down here and you can show off to your hearts content ... lol.

Playing with my knobs much, you ask? Hhhhmmmmmmm. Should I? I thought
they were there to be decorative and to polish. Dammit Peter, you should
have told me earlier.

Cheers.

Ken
