gear box oil leak

Hello,

I have had a small oil leak from my gear box for as long as I have owned my syncro about 18 months. The leak isnt large but I am feeling the need to check the level of oil in the box and dont how to do it, how do I add oil if its needed? Should I empty the oil in it before adding new oil and how do I remove the oil and lastly what oil do I use for best results? Thanks for any help with this. Greg
To check the oil you will find a filler plug on the side of the gearbox. You will need a 17mm allen key to remove it. Stick your finger in the hole and the level should be 10mm below the bottom of the hole. To top it up use the recommended grade of gearbox oil as in the workshop manual. Do not use GL5 oil.

Greg,if you dont know what oil is in the box or how long it has been there you should drain the whole lot.Follow the workshop manual or Phills instruction.Oils aint Oils. The recomended oil is not cheap but it is a necesity.Do not use any multigear oil.Check the filler plug when its out,if it is covered in metal shavings, start saving for transaxle repair in the near future.Whilst changing gearbox oil,do the front diff at the same time.I replace these oils every 12 months, you dont need to do this, but I would recomend if you do any water crossings to change transaxle/front diff oils asap after trip.

Greg,

A small weep is of little concern.  Check the oil level as described by Phill and top up if needed to a point 10mm below the hole.  Don’t be tempted to overfill because it interferes with the design of the oil circulation.  The oil is circulated by being flung off the gears.  This creates a rain of oil the constantly falls back into the gear trains and shafts.

Before you attempt to remover the filler plug, clean out the hexagonal recess very thoroughly.  If you haven’t got a suitable tool, like a 90 degree scriber, make one out of fencing wire and file it to a sharp point so that you can get into all the corners.  The reason for this cleaning is that if the 17mm key does not go right to the bottom of the hex recess, it is all too easy to strip the hex recess and then you have got a major problem.  The time it takes to completely clean out the hex recess is very cheap insurance.

If the oil level is suspiciously low – you might have to use a piece of curved wire to find the level – then it is worth draining and refilling.  An accumulation of whiskers on the magnetic insert in the drain plug might look frightening but, harking back to the days when I used to rally and otherwise mistreat Beetles, it doesn’t seem to have any bearing on the life of the gearbox.  If you find actual chips, that is a different matter but, if the gearbox is now quiet, it is probably ok.

Les

Thanks to all of you for clear instructions.

The box is quiet and running well at this stage.

How do I drain the box if I have to. Is there a sump plug somewhere or do I suck it out? Greg

Greg,

Sump plug, same tool and the same instructions apply for completely cleaning out the hex recess.

Note that some of the oil is retained in the diff compartment of the gearbox, so the amount of oil required is less that the specified amount.  Just keep checking for the 10mm as you fill.

If you don’t know how long the oil has been in this box, there is a good case for changing the oil in any event so that you have a known point.

Les

Forgive me for asking what should be obvious (even though I have studied the manual). Is the drain plug connected to the clutch housing or is it the plug just forward of the diff lock mechanism on the drivers side? Or is this one the filler? Thanks Greg

Greg,

From memory, the filler is on the front right side about half way up.  The drain is on the underside just in front of the clutch housing.

Greg, the filler is on the drivers side behind the gear linkages at the gearbox. The drain is a the bottom of the clutch housing. The skid plate should be removed for easier removal of the drain plug and draining of the oil.

Thanks Ben on both counts.

I have just been down to my local repco and Auto 1 stores to purchase GL-4 SAE80 as per the manual and they dont stock it and have never had it. (what a surprise)

Can someone give me the name of a quality brand of oil with the right spec that I can hunt down to do the job? Greg

Greg, hi,

Just for what it’s worth, filling the gearbox with oil can be a challenge, so I cut myself a +- 1 mtr  20mm electrical plastic conduit  and bend the end, using a heat gun. You can insert it into the filling hole and by using a funnel one wouldn’t waste a drop of that precious oil. I can’t remember if I took a the rear wheel off or not but if you go this way you will find out.  Hartmut

Or if you want to be really fancy you could by a "tom thumb". They are a pump that screws onto the bottle, only $10-15 and made in Aus. Greg.E

Greg&Greg what about Castrol Manual Syntrax 75W-90 ? Would that be OK or should we only use it in reconditioned or new gearbox? I bought mine at Supercheat because they charged $4 less per litre than Repco.

Btw, this is the oil our gear guru Rudi recommends. Hartmut

Greg,

May I suggest that the easiest path is to go to your nearest auto parts place and get an oil filler gun.  It is like a grown up bicycle tyre pump, usually around 500cc capacity.  It comes with a plastic extension tube such that you can insert the end of the tube into the filler hole and gently push the plunger.  You can fill or top up a gearbox very easily with this method and beats any funnel arrangement.  They cost $10 or so.

Hartmut

Hartmut, Do not use syntrax in your transmission only in your front diff. It is gl5 and is not compatible with the metals in the gearbox.

Hartmut

Greg, try asking for castrol vmx 80. It is stocked by super cheap and repco. It is only a mineral oil but if your not too hard core and change it regularly it will be fine. Greg E

Greg

When you say "only a mineral oil" what are the other options available? Do they need changing less? Greg
