gear boxes

Hi Gary there are lots of misinformation out there the bottom line is that only full synthetic oil is to be used and specified in the boxes as the use of mineral oils reduce the life of the box by half there is also oil plates that are installed in sth Africa as standard guess the heat over there stops the oil circulating over the gears and the oil plates throw it back on the gears I have been told by the guys who rebuild boxes in Aust that there not needed (sound like they like rebuilding the same  boxes ching ching )  I think that vw Aust were very ordinary in the way they  introduced Australia to the syncro via the Telstra. Deal

They look like they have cut the guts out of it all to make a fat profit hence no locking diffs no oil plates in the boxes and so on then on the other side of the coin the mechanics that serviced & worked on them are not worth a “pinch of shit” not that many mechanics are!!

they put mineral oil in the gear box oil changes They put phosphate glycol (green workshop glycol0 in the cooling system which strips out the alloy in the motor forming alloy plugs in the top of the radiator cores causing over heating that was a 2 in the morning jobby for me after taking it to a VW mechanic to fix the over heating problem that didn’t get fixed with work net day 7 am start !!! the same shit  corrodes the head studs, also when they had clutch problems from all the dust they encounter on the dirt roads  they changed the clutch plate and ground the flywheel making the distance from the flywheel to the clutch lever fulcrum point further away meaning that the peddle disengaged the clutch at the floor making it hard to change gears stressing the linkages and the gear box .

Think we should stat a class action against vw and the mechanics that worked on them no happy Jan I want to get my vw back on the road but can’t see that these guys in Aust know how to build a box well as they have said nothing to convince me other wise

Ps from my research another factor that makes the boxes fall over early is the lash it needs to be adjusted at interval as the side thrust from the independent rear end wears the bearings which sets the crown wheel on the pinion

Pps im looking to import a box with all the gear on it eg diff lock decoupler unit oil plates fitted good warranty etc etc from OS and think we can get a better deal if we order a few of them am interested in getting a buying group together  if any one is keen  my mobile is 0412665 113 Peter Hungerford

Oil plates would not have been an option as these were South Africa only and not available on German built boxes.

There is much truth in the rest of your post.

Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] gear boxes
Hi Peter, some good points but I guess any vehicle that has fairly high ks on it is likely to be looking at a gearbox rebuild. I imagine a lot of the Telstra vans were abused during their early lives too.

There is a guy over on Aussiveedubbers (and here too I think) called Andrew (Iwishforasyncro) who imported a complete box and front diff and fitted it all to his Syncro. Might be worth trying to find him and ask him about it.

I’ve looked at a few suppliers who offer this and they all require your original box as core which could be expensive if you are shipping it to Germany.

My box is ok but I do worry about the scarcity of parts if it does fail, these are becoming increasingly rare vehicles particularly here in Australia.

Let us all know what sort of price you get offered if you do go for an import.

Cheers
Gary

Syncrospares in England are willing to export boxes to Australia. (non exchange)

Gday Gary and Peter and ALL,

Peter, I hear the pain in your voice, in my opinion, justifiably so.
Where in Oz is there a syncro Pro?

Gary, it's fair to say we all are dreading the day the gearbox or some
other major component fails and we're faced with the dilemma of who to
turn to with sufficient confidence.

If you guys are "do it yourself types", keen to learn, maybe save some
money and live with the consequences if things go awry .... fine. Not a
problem. Go for it.

If, like a lot of us, you prefer to trust others to professionally fix
our syncros, pay a fair price for that expertise and do it properly the
first time, particularly drivetrain components, then for mine, there is
only one person with integrity, unique expertise and well worth
trusting. Rudi on Bribie Island, Queensland.

It's no skin off my nose if you ignore this advice, I leave it with you
both as an option. Remember, freighting a gearbox to him for his
attention is not so difficult these days. And he is very happy to talk
to people on the phone about their concerns, IF you genuinely want
professional advice and work done.

Cheers.

Ken

I've met CJ.
As Phil said, he is happy to help us over here and he sells (and breaks out parts from) a lot of
Syncro's.
