Gearbox rebuild

Hi
Iam about to drop the gearbox out, and have it rebuilt, and would like to know if any one has converted a 6P '03 090' gearbox into a lockable diff ?
also oiling plates are they available in Australia.

Thanks, Phil

I too would like to know where the oiling plates are available from as I have been looking at
many of the vendors from the U.S. and cannot even find a mention of them.

Thanks.

Hi Les

Saw you posting over on Club 80-90. Seems like Aidan Talbot is the man to know regarding Syncro box rebuilds over there!

Just curious which oil you went with in the end? Mineral or Synthetic?

Gary,

Based on the advice of several people who rebuild Syncro gearboxes for a living, I have gone with mineral.

Aidan was the man who had a needle roller bearing that no one else had.

Do they use mineral because it is cheaper?

The genuine VW oil is synthetic.

Phill

P.S. Do not overfill. (10mm below plug)
Phill,

No.  The advice I have is based on the condition of known gearboxes on disassembly after known service and is not of the "Yair, mate, I'd use mineral if I wuz you" variety.  The discussions have been cogent and comprehensive, examining the cons as much as the pros.  One such conversation was nearly an hour on the phone; a considerable amount of detail can be covered in that time.

Gday Les and ALL,

Interesting. So I take it Rudi's advice was not canvassed? I know he is
receptive to genuine enquiries.

Cheers

Les,
What was their reasoning for using mineral in preference to synthetic?
