gearbox trouble (rear)

hi guys n gals, my problem this week is ive almost lost reverse gear,
if i drive slower than walking its ok but any faster and it loks the
whole thing up like ive hit a wall, im also jumping out of first gear
and the box whines rather alot in any gear, ive changed the oil for
penrite gl4, but the whine was before the oil change. can any one
supply a rear gear box or reccomend someone who can rebuild it? cheers

p.s. i got a r/h/d 16" syncro in uk waiting to be shipped out. i
converted it myself- poss the only converted 16" syncro??

Hi

I can rebuild it for you. Am located in Batemans Bay NSW so you would
have to courier the box to me. Set aside about 2grand for parts, and a
grand for me :-)

Dear Les and Volks,

Have just returned from the most wonderful trip across the Nullabor to Perth saying hello to Andy at Ceduna on the way.Thanks Andy for coming out to see us.Then went up to Shark Bay and the dophins of Monkey Mia before returning to the extreme South West corner (Cape Leeuwin) via Margaret River on to Albany via the Karri Forests,Esperance and then back across the Nullabor pausing at the Head of the Bight to go whale watching.
 If any of you ever feel like losing faith in your Syncro take it for a "run round the block" like this. There is nothing to compare it for versatility and competence.
Have posted a few photos from the many available and am attaching a couple hopefully to wet your interest.

sorry i forgot to mention that im in perth WA, im quite handy with
fixing stuff, although the gearbox does look a little daunting, i think
with a bit of patience etc i should be able to crack it, or p/ex it for

hi pete, what will i get for my 3 grand? an "as new" box or might it break the first time i go for a spin? what if the ally case is broke or damaged? will it be repaired or replaced? cheers jon

You can find DIY instructions at the other Syncro site:

Look in the files section under technical / transmission and also in
the photos section under transmission.
This information is an adjunct to the full workshop manual.
The help files detail what you need esp. how to make special tools.

(Les if you read this, I can port over all those files to this site
if you want)

What do you get for 3 grand? Well that is an estimate only & the
parts you require could vary considerably. You wont know until you
strip down the transmission.
I import all the bits from USA & there are a few suppliers depending
on what you need and after duty, GST & freight it all adds up.

If you have reasonable / good mechanical skills it is not rocket
science. Allow yourself 1-2 weeks & work slowly & methodically
through the manual & other help files & you will get there.

It would be wise to have a close look at the ring & pinion gears &
if in doubt replace them with the pinion bearing.
Also the mainshaft bearing and side carrier bearings should also be
replaced if the box has done a lot of work.
The gear carrier housings are also known to fail especially around
where the main bearing sits.
By the sound of it you may have to replace a sychronizer assy as
well.
Oiling plates should also go in at rebuild time (they are plastic
bits that direct oil onto the gears).

Import from USA is the way to go. Make a complete list of what you
need then get quotes.
