Gearbox work

Well i am new to the scene and i have bought a syncro (92 model) with
no diff lockers and a busted gearbox. So here is question is there
anyone out there who may be around my area, Maclean Grafton,ByronBay
area, who would be available to have a sus ay my gbox so i am led in
the right direction, trying to avoid major cost if possible, yes i
know i wish. So far i have diagnosed that the syncroniser ring/hub in
lower box (1st/Reverse) is cactus, but again need direction. As usual
got some grindage and slop on main shaft(pinion) Hopefully this is
just pinion bearings or main, hopefully.
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Talk to Rudi Purkhart at Bribie Island (07 3408 6669,  purkhart@australiaonline.net.au .  We met him at the Valla VW event, and he is a real syncro enthusiast who specializes in gearboxes.  If that is too far, the guys at Stoker’s Siding seem to have a good rep. although I have no personal experience.  Don’t leave it long.  Driving on a damaged box can increase your repair bill by $1000’s

Thanks Brian,
Will give Rudi a call.
Car at standstill at present and not going anywhere as problem was pre existing. ( as is when purchased) came home fron Brisbane on Flatbed.
If previous owner stopped at first sign of grindage then it may not look so bad in there, but then again i may not have gotten the chance to get me a syncro.

I was told by the guy who did my box at tucker road motors in Bentleigh VIC that because
the box was not in Neutral when it locked up (apparently to open it, it needs to be in
neutral) he had to break quite a few parts to get the box to split. Whether that is true or
not I don't know, but you may want to keep that in mind....

Ok may sound like an amatuer, but i do know this syncroniser hub ring in lower box connectors snapped one shredded, also Cv mount  and main shaft spins freely so unless there is something else going on inside i think i am in neutral. Box rebuilt and still running fine??? How long has rebuild been good for???

I had it done three years ago and a year after rebuild (5 parts from austria) I had a noisey
final output bearing which they fixed under warranty (went in just after it ran out but he was
feeling nice) and it has been running quite well since. I had two new uni's put on the shaft.
The box was 4300 bucks, installed. But I never felt bad about it 'cos it's a lot cheaper than a
new car that you can't buy like ours anyway. A friend is fitting out a new syncro and its
costing him 18 grand just to have optional gearing/suspension option.

good drivin', cam.
Optional gearing and suspension??
Oh and Merry Christmas

Hello All
I am going to the Batemans Bay tour and I was
wondering if anybody wanted a 27x8.50 R 14 BF Goodrich All Terrain T/
A. It is 4 years old but has never been on the Van. Bought it new in
September 2002. I went to 15's 18 months or so ago so I don't need
it. It's a give away.

I live near Rockhampton so will be going down the inland route,
Goondiwindi, Moree, Narrabri etc and probably coming home the along
the coast.

Regards

Bruce
Gday Bruce,

Thanks for the offer, if it's still available and convenient for you,
I'd be happy to take it off your hands please down at Batemans Bay. I
need a spare for my 14" rim set as one of my 14" tyres recently
delaminated in the heat. I assume it fits the stock standard VW 6J steel
rim.

Could you let me know either way please. Thanks and cheers.

Ken

Hello all,

Well, I’ve finally succumbed to temptation and ordered a new T5 Trakkadu, so my Syncro will be officially on the market after the Bateman’s Bay trip.  I’d obviously like it to go to some-one who will appreciate it, and so I’m offering it through the group first.  Arriving at a fair price is difficult, but the last one I know of, to change hands in Melbourne went for $10,500, in basically the same condition they were sold at the auctions by Telstra.  Mine has an extensive camper fit-out (not a ‘factory’ job, but pretty efficient, even if I do say so myself), and has had a complete mechanical renovation in the 10 years I’ve owned it, including a rebuilt engine, and replacement of all major coolant hoses ($6000+) in the last couple of years (gearbox and VC were done earlier).  It also has an LPG conversion, which is a real life-saver with todays fuel prices. So the asking price is $14,000.  (I’ve just renewed the insurance and even RACV thinks the market value is up to $13,000.)

The down side; no rear diff lock (I’ll tell you how important that is after Bateman’s Bay), no pop-top (I don’t really miss it), paint-work is good and shiny but starting to get a bit thin in some areas (mainly rear door and roof)

I’ve copied (below) an ad which I will be placing in the VWCV magazine next issue. And, just by the way, it has been a place-getter at past ‘Day of the Volkswagen’ events.

RARE  1990 SYNCRO TRANSPORTER

(AVAILABLE FROM MID JANUARY; NEW T5 ON ORDER)

LPG CONVERSION FOR AFFORDABLE RUNNING

COMPREHENSIVE CAMPER FIT-OUT

(3 Way Electrolux fridge, Removable Gas Stove, Hot &Cold pressurized water to sink and rear shower, Convertible double bed/3 seater with belts, Porta-Potti, good storage. NO POP-TOP (maintains structural integrity for off-road use)

ONE OWNER FOR LAST 10 YEARS

NO EXPENSE SPARED ON MAINTENANCE

ENTIRE DRIVE TRAIN (except front diff) AND COOLING SYSTEM RENOVATED OR REPLACED OVER THIS TIME.

PRICE;  $14,000

Contact;  Brian Reed;  9481 5673    0407 319 521  ( Fairfield )

Now I'm not sure what the etiquette is on a list like this but I got 2 reply's on the tyre.

The first to come in was from Pete in Montville and the second was from Ken who is going to Batemans Bay. I guess it goes to the first in, it was close though at only 11 minutes. Unless of course there is some other way to sort it out!!!

It fits the standard syncro rims and is free, a Christmas present.

Gday again Bruce,

Thanks for the reply concerning the tyre status. Obviously it's your
choice and convenience who you pass the tyre to. Can I just say that in
the first instance, you seemed to link the give away to Batemans Bay
participants, hence my early response.

Either way Bruce, I look forward to meeting you at Batemans. Cheers.

Ken
