heater on

Hi all I have been studying posts regarding heaters that remain on despite leaver on dash being closed. The cable sheath on mine is intact both ends and moves freely. The valve has no play left in it after the cable is put in the off position but it still produces hot air.

I take it then that the valve is leaking is that right?

If one replaces the valve is it easier to disconnect the hose from the heater core and drop it down or replace it in position behind the radiator fan.

Your comments are welcomed. Thanks Greg

Greg,

I had a similar problem with a Tarago some years ago and it proved to be a leaking valve so that’s probably what you have got.

Hi Greg,
It was Scott of US Turbovans who suggested cribbing the dash heat lever cable slightly to one side toward cold so that greater leverage could then be achieved at the dash to lever the valve closed as far as possible. I tried it and I think it worked for me. Idea being to attempt to apply a little more leverage to close the valve just that little bit more.

Addon shuttoff valve to heater hose, placed close to say where the heater hose Ts into the front end of the "BIG" metal coolant pipe (passenger side) ....sure fire way to turn OFF the heat during summer ...

I think by far the biggest problem we have with heat in the area of front occupants footwell is all the radiator heat hitting the floor pan and radiating inside.
Good luck.

Greg, Les, Ken,
I have a similar story to tell. Some time ago I cleaned the radiator and as "preventative" maintenance, I also replaced the heater valve.
It was a non genuine one from Van-Cafe. The other day, while adjusting the gear stick I noticed that the valve was leaking.
(It is amazing what you can see while you are under there).
A new one from VW (Singapore) cost $78. So what did I do, I installed the old original valve which I still have.
Unfortunately, in the off position, hot air was still blowing, However I was able to readjust the cable sheath and so for so good.
But what a job!
With my Syncro it is a love/hate relationship.
Cherrs,
Theo

Thanks for your help Theo I have 2 Qs on my mind,

is the adjustment on the cable sheath at the leaver end in the dash or the valve end up behind the radiator?

When you refitted the original valve the second time did you have to remove the hose off the heater core inside the cab and lower the whole thing down to get to it or did you have to do it in situ and struggle with the lack of room behind the radiator fan?

Greg

Greg,

I did it on the valve, not sure if you can do it on the lever end.
To adjust the cable, the valve has to be in the natural position otherwise you'll never get the metal-clip on.
I moved the 2 heater hoses out of the way to have a bit more room.
Good luck.

Cheers,
Theo

Hi Ken,
To overcome the heat radiated from the floor one could insulate the floor a la Tristar as VW has done it. Very effective, and doable. The material is semi soft foam all floor areas. Will show you next time we meet.

Hartmut,

Many years ago, I found a reference of the Internet to installing such a kit.  It was illustrated with good pics.  From memory, it was a VAG kit.

Surely with the right material it wouldnt be too difficult to do a DIY project on.

Is there anything easily available to do the job? Greg

Or considering things have advanced since 1992 just buy some fatmat or dynamat and go crazy. I would cover the whole front floor  the whole rear deck above the engine and a small square inside each exterior panel to deaden it. Also the way the radiator fan blows directly onto the floor pan is mad. I think a tin shield would be best there. Greg E

Thanks Ken and Scott cribbing the dash heat lever cable toward the cold has worked a treat. Problem solved. Thanks Greg
