Looking to do a Subaru conversion in Perth

Yes but it’s easily washable right?
What would you replace it with?

Yes washable but seriously useless after about 5k on a dusty road as the wheels aim the dust at it.

I have used the factory EJ25 air box but Rocky Mountain Westy (VanCafe) make a really nice one which I plan to also get.

This needs to be combined with hooking it up to the re-located snorkel system.

The inlet to my standard filter on my 2wd was there. Filter was filthy and sucking in hot air. Joined it to the standard snorkel and was much better. And that didn’t go off road.

I might look into that van café one - what’s it called? Part #?
I still have the snorkel coming down the RH side, what do you mean by relocates?

Hi Gaetan,

The snorkel on the left side can be easily removed - it just pulls off taps horizontally and the same tabs exist on the passenger side so you can move it over. Then connect it to something like this:

Cheers,

Scott

Pretty pricey option!
So for the snorkel you meant on the RH side and move it to LH side right?
Is this the only conversion available or is there any way to mod the Subaru air filter box - not that I have it but may be cheaper.
I also wonder why Luke who’s done 80+ conversions went for that pod if it’s that bad?
First bug trip coming up so we’ll see how it holds up

Luke probably hasn’t done it to a syncro,

I’ll ask, but pretty sure he’s done a few!

Loads of people do the pod filter as its really quick, easy and CHEAP!
Cheap is the main point here.

Luke does a great job but he he does it for a price and will take the cheap way out unless you tell him otherwise.

Ok makes sense. I’ll defo research this - if you do end going with the van café option let me know what you’ll do with the Subi one you’re using. I need to curb my spending a bit…

Probably a lot cheaper to go to a local wrecker.
we imported thousands of Gen 3 EJ 25 engines so I am sure you will find one local and cheap.

Cool. Luke says the original doesn’t fit on the Syncro so I’m guessing it’ll take a bit of modifying. Will look into what I can get!

Hi Gaetan,

The original air box does actually fit - just not in the factory Subaru location.

Mine is tucked into the left back corner and I used a bracket that I salvaged from the Subie wreck to keep it in place. Works great but I still like the RMW version better.

That does look cool. So you swapped the VW snorkel from right to left and connected to that?
I guess I’ll need to go look at wreckers for a filter box…

Yep.

Snorkel is easily transferred and includes a flexible section which can be connected to the airbox.

Hi Scott,

I finally got round to get a Liberty air filter box and have a bug trip coming up. Wondering if you have any more pics of your bracket and how it connects to the snorkel?
Also what did you do to close the hole at the bottom of the Subaru air box?
Cheers
Gaetan

Hi Gaetan,

The air-box sits there happily so my small bracket which I pulled off the donor car just keeps it in place.

There was no hole in my air-box other than for the throttle body and rocker cover vents - not sure which model you have but mine was a 2000 model Subaru (same as the engine) but they seem the same through to the end of the 2003 models.

Here are the best photos I can take with the engine bay all in place.

Thanks Scott.

I think the one I got was too new - it’s got that big dust collector bottle attached. I’m prolly going to go with the Van Café one, even if it needs further adaptation to connect to the snorkel.
I’ve been doing some dirt tracks on current trip, so daily washing the pod for now and so far so good
Cheers
G

Agree, that Rocky Mountain Westy version supplied by Van Cafe is perfect.

I like their aluminum coolant tank too.
