I think our syncros are still too late a model vehicles to be able to come in and be used permanently here as LHD although Dieter seemed to do it with his ex-German police vehicle with Westfalia pop top.
There is a Westfalia syncro in Sydney that gets around but it has been converted to RHD (Sliding door stayed in the LHD position and I have seen it around for at least 18months now on the road fully registered.
I would say it is definitely possible.
Maybe our German friends could give some advice as to what they did.
Cheers and Welcome,

Hello to Scotland (where I studied for a year) and to OZ (which I travelled for nearly a year in my Westfalia syncro back in 2003 and without my syncro on several other occasions).
Sorry for my non-native English. I will try to help in summarising what we did to make our OZ experience in our syncro come true.
Before deciding on how to do it, we reached the following conclusions (which of course may not suit other people):
1) We wanted to further use the syncro when returning from OZ
2) We realised that shipping to and from OZ would be equal to hiring a similar beast in OZ for six weeks. We didn't want to be under pressure having to sell a car at the end of our travels.
3) We wanted to get to know our companion as good and as long as possible before travelling, especially in the light of travelling remote regions
4) As the camper would be our home for nearly one year, we wanted it to be set up to our specific needs
OK, so after having had the ex police vehicle converted into a camper (which also nearly took us a year), we shipped it from Hamburg in Northern Germany to Fremantle/Perth, which took round about six weeks. We ourselves flew in a couple of days before the syncro arrived in Freo.
We then had a contact person from the shipping company in Freo who organised the container to be opened under supervision of the customs and quarantine people.
Once cleared, we needed the permission from the Department of Transport to have our syncro driven from the port to the Fremantle Licing Center, from which we got our Roadworthiness sticker.
This procedure involved a lot of paperwork, time and patience, both in Germany and in Australia, but in the end, it was more than worth it.
I don't want to bore the group with further details at this point, but am of course happy to answer individual queries by direct mail to joachimdietlicher@email.de
LHD rego for one year was no problem at all for us back then, the only thing required a CAUTION - LEFT HAND DRIVE sticker attached at the back of the car.
Cheers,
Joachim

If you buy a good one(the guys could guide you in the right direction) the depreciation would be negligable you may even make a profit, and you would be sitting on the correct side of the vehicle. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THE ATTRACTION OF DRIVING THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, and money outlay issues. Could you type a bit slower the accent is a bit hard to understand. Cheers Bill.

Chris,
Give me a few days and I will get the current requirements for registering LH drive vehicles. There is a big difference in the relevant regulations between an imported vehicle identical to one that was retailed in Australia and those that were never sold here, The latter can still be imported but come under a different category in respect of compliance with Australian Design Rules. To obtain Australian registration, ALL vehicles have to comply with ADRs.
In respect of the Number of Trakka conversions sold, we have no idea. In fact, we have no idea how many Syncros were imported. No records of imports still exist.

Phill,
I am not fully up to speed on what he needs. I am having serious rogue data download problems (for the last two months!!!) and have been skipping between two computers. As a result, I had over 700 unread emails to deal with and I spent from 0330 to 0530 today getting that under control so I am not as properly informed as I should be.

Hi Chris ,
Les again is so right ! Ask me , after 20 Trooopy Tristar years my wife bought me a beautiful Trakka . Now it’s twice the fun ! These toys are so funky--nothing beats them for looks, functionality, longlivity and so much more. Some aspects we rather not mention ....they keep us and this brilliant site going....

He probably already has a Carnet but needs the information from the Australian FORS site. Forms need to be filled out months before he leaves.
