Dear Aussie Syncronauts

I have just been referred to this group by Rick (Ricktout). We met
on the edge of the Clyde River at Shallow Crossing. Small world is
this place!

Hello to everyone and I hope your Syncrobeasts are behaving.

I just spent an hour reviewing the lists here and I wish that I had
known about it earlier. I can see that there is a lot of experience
and enthusiasm in this group and I look forward to tapping in.
Here I am thinking I am all alone, well actually I do live in a
remote part of the NSW south coast.

Quick Bio.

I purchased my Syncro early 90's with 50,000kms on the clock.
Since then I have been around Australia and done substantial
exploration of many parts thereof. The clock has gone around at
least 3 times maybe 4 (I lost count).
I used to be a keen hang glider pilot and that required navigating a
lot of steep & rough (extreme) mountain tracks. The Syncro was
loaded to the hilt with gliders, pilots and equipment and it
performed faultlessly chugging away in G and the rear dif locked up.
It was by far the most superior 4WD in our club.

As you are all aware by now the Syncro is a high maintenance
tractor. I guess it is no coincidence that groups like this have
sprung up around the world to help each other keep them on the road.
I have pulled apart just about everything more than once including
the transmission and front final drive.

I am currently re building my transmission at the moment (3rd time)
and at the same time documenting the procedure. That information is
being posted on the other Syncro list which I'm sure you all know
about.

Kind regards to all

Peter
Peter,

Rick e-mailed me and said that he had met you but was concerned that he had given you the wrong e-mail contact.  Obviously he didn't and you have made contact.

Welcome to the Australian Syncronauts.  You have certainly made more use of your Syncro than most of us and your experience will be of great value to everyone.

Since I have located and activated the website function that tells
me when a new member has joined, I will be posting a welcome to each
one.

The latest is Craig of Melbourne.

Graig,

Welcome to the Syncro_T3_Australia website.

Please take a little time to post a message, introducing your self
and giving details of your Syncro. Everyone is always keen to know
about new vehicles. There is a good representation of owners in
Melbourne but the list members range over a lot of Australia. (If
you haven't got a Syncro but are looking for one, the website is a
good place to make the fact known.)

There are a number of VW Club of Victoria gatherings throughout the
year and many of us meet there. There was one yesterday at the
Caribbean Gardens in Scoresby. You might be one of the people who
came to talk to us.

There is a week-long Syncro camp being planned for Bateman's Bay in
January next year, organized by one of the Sydney list members. You
would be very welcome to come.

I have an 89 Transporter, with rear diff lock and a German
decoupler, plus a full Trakka camping conversion. It is the vehicle
pictured on the home page of the website.

I am the owner of the website and can be contacted through the
website through my e-mail leslieharris@optushome.com.au or on 9327
7609 most evenings. My mobile is 0427 112 392.

Hello fellow Syncronites

I'm a 58yo male newbie here and feeling my way around the site, so
please be gentle. Nice to find an OZ Syncro group. I've been the proud
owner of a 1976 VW Kombi 2 cab ute for the past 25 years (still got it)
and now am the proud new owner from 3 weeks ago of a white 1990 T3
Syncro + Trakka Campervan. Bought it from a guy in Sydney after
searching for 4 months online and now it resides in Gosford, just up the
F3 north of Sydney.

It's done 175,000k's, seems ok mechanically (I think) but I'm flat out
at the moment trying to learn all about it and having a go at giving it
loads of TLC to get things working better on the camper and accessories
side of things after 16 years of use by the 2 previous owners .. no
mean feat.

Of immediate concern is sagging struts on the Trakka Pop Top. Trakka no
longer has any stock of them and the distributor of Stabilus struts in
Melbourne doesn't even have a listing for the correct model either.
People tell me re-gassing is only a short term solution and at best can
only be done once successfully anyway (seals give out) and not as strong
as the originals either. So the best Trakka could do for me was to sell
me a different model strut they used on the early T4 Trakka pop tops but
as the end thread sizes are different from mine, they said I need to
helicoil the threads on the new struts and then screw on the end
fittings from my sagging struts. I'd appreciate it if anyone has any
better ideas or perhaps source the correct or similar model strut
somewhere else.

Of longer term concern is some evidence of seam rust, so I need to
address that ... don't want to lose this super vehicle to metal cancer.

I read in Messages you are planning a Syncro get together at Batemans
Bay early in 2007, sounds pretty interesting so I may be a starter,
assuming I get things sorted with the T3 by then.

If anyone would like to contact me, please feel free to, along with
seeking help, I'm very happy to help anyone else too if I can.

Cheers all .. Ken

Ken,

Welcome to the Syncro_T3_Australia community.

We have a number of members in NSW and around Sydney.  We had/have several around the Central Coast but haven't heard much from them for some time.  Your listing might rouse some of them to say welcome as well.  (As an aside, I lived on Dangar Island for about two years, but that's another story.)

Several of us own Trakka converted Syncros, including myself.  Since the Trakka conversion is not directly Syncro related, it is a bit off-topic and I will e-mail you direct about the gas props and related matters

The Tour 07 has members coming from various directions and the intention is that we will convoy from various points and meet at Bateman's.  This tour is being organized by Rick, who lives in Sydney.  Sydney will be one of the convoy starting points.  Now that you are on board, we might stir some of the Central Coast members into action and Gosford could well become another convoy starting point.

There is a major VW event in NSW over Easter.  Rick will be there and undoubtedly other Syncro owners.  Rick has put the details in the links page of the website.  (Rick, you might e-mail Ken direct about this.)

Ken,

Forgot to add that, next after this website, the Syncro owner's best friend is the Bentley manual for the vehicle.  They are a bit pricey but it is very good insurance.  You might even be able to pick one up at the Easter VW meeting.

Gday Les
Thanks for that about the Bentley manual, I haven't seen one of those
yet, is that like an idiots manual for T3's, similar to "The Compleat
Idiot" manual for T2's, Beetles etc. by John Muir?

As luck would have it, my Syncro came with a set of 3 VAG Service
Manuals covering 2.1 Litre Fuel Injection Engine, Running Gear and
4WD 5 speed manual gearbox 094 and final drive. Heavy reading for
when one wants to get to sleep pretty damn quick ... lol. But much
appreciated reference resources.

Cheers

Hi all,

Just put on a new syncro video clip on my homepage www.busman.be J

Hello All. I am a new member, currently without a Syncro. I have
driven a T2 2WD in desert conditions, and would now like to do the same
in a Syncro. I have heard independent reports of Michael's performance
last weekend in the Big Desert and am very envious. My problem is
getting hold of a Syncro. If any members can guide me in the right
direction I would be very grateful.

Danny
Danny,

Trawling the Internet probably casts the widest net.  Several members do this on a regular basis and post whatever they find here, so keep an eye on posts.

Gday Danny,

These 2 syncros are still available, one is a caravelle bus, the other a fully fitted out camper.

As luck would have it, they both have a rear diflock, a particularly enticing and desirable feature for serious syncronaughts ...

Patience is the name of the game if you know what you want and be prepared to wait, do your homework, monitor daily the online vehicle websites, classifieds etc. Twelve months can easily be used up searching if you have particular needs. When the right one pops up, you'll know by your gut feeling. I tend to think if you are impatient about this pre-ownership phase and rush in, you may well regret a hasty decision. So take your time, become an expert on the subject and it'll stand you in good stead when the time arrives to make a decision.

Danny,

The camper has been purchased by a woman in Melbourne.  She is in the process of joining Syncro_T3_Australia and expects to be at the DotVW at Cranbourne Racecourse on 16 November.

Thank you Les & Ken,

The caravelle also seems to have disappeared, but I will keep
trawling the net. I have a somewhat limited time, with a desert trip
planned for June 2009, and may have to opt for a T3 2WD as the next
best option. I will visit the display at Cranbourne and hope to meet
up with you.

Hi Danny,

Re 2wd options, look for Neil at DotVW. He did the Cape Yorke trip with us in his T2 2wd (blue & white). Also talk to Boris at Volkscare (03 9729 9281), as he has done a fair bit of off-roading in a 2wd T3, and may still have a Trakka camper (ex syncro, now 2wd) for sale.

Gday Danny,

It's now the lead up time to the Xmas holidays so more than less syncro
owners would be thinking about using their vehicles ... not selling
them. You would do better after they all return the first half of next
year.

Top of your Xmas pressies list for your 2WD T3 alternative should be a
shovel and snatch strap .... enjoy the exercise.

Cheers.

Ken

Danny, that camper looks to be a good one, especially if the ks are genuine and it has history to prove it. Depends if you want a camper of course but if you do, buying one complete rather than trying to build one will get you out there so much quicker.

It also has aircon which is a bit of a rarity and well worth having.

The price seems a bit high though, not sure what a realistic price is for a well cared for trakka syncro.

Scratch those comments, I should have read my emails in date order!

Welcome Francesca, looks like you are in Northcote so just up the road from me (Nth Fitzroy) and Roger (Carlton).

If you need any help of a syncro nature, please just ask.

Cheers

Hello everyone.

My name is Greg I live in Bunbury WA
I have enjoyed reading quite a few posts and checking out your forum.
I have just bought a silvery/ bronze 88 Trakka Syncro with a pop top.
Pretty happy with it. In fact i love it.

Its done a 170Ks according to the books and drives very sweet.
Never had a kombi before but have always wanted one. It appears the
vehicle is sitting a couple of inches higher than normal on 14" rims
and the back end fairly bangs coming off speed bumps. Not sure whether
to change the springs back to original spec or the shockies. The front
is the same height but rides beautifully.

My appologies for slipping in early looking for help but this bang is
really quite annoying.

Thanks in advance for any help. Greg
