Questions on behalf of Kevin Hargraves

Kevin is a recent member, lives 100 km south of Perth, is looking for a
Syncro. He is working away from home for two weeks and can't access our
website so I am putting questions on his behalf.

1. He has found an ex-Telecom Syncro advertised for $11,000 and
believes that he might be able to get it for less. Does this sound like
a reasonable price?

2. Telecom didn't get rear diff locks and Kevin has been quoted over
$3000 to fit a rear diff lock. This sound to me like the cost is based
on new genuine VW parts. Can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative?
(Andrew and Melissa have been looking for a rear lock recently.)

3. Kevin wants to know how well a non-difflock Syncro handles sand. I
know that there are several WA list members with sand experience. Could
you please post your observations for Kevin's benefit.

Thanks all

Les

I got my ex-Telecom for $7000 in Sydney. Haven't hit the sand yet,
but good in mud :) Sam.

$11,000 or even less eh Kevin? Depends on the relative condition of the vehicle your looking at, your homework to get an idea on current values and your gut feeling ... is the configuration and condition on offer essentially what you want for the money?

For example, a 1989 T3 Auto Trakka in good nic sold recently at Sydney RV Centre for $22,000. It's not even a Syncro.

Also, a fabulous looking 1991 T3 Syncro 2 cab ute is currently for sale at www.carsales.com.au for $14,000. Go check it out and drool. I'd like it in my stable .... absolutely! ... lol

I know the Syncro Kevin is talking about ... it started for sale at $18,000. Looks good in the photos but I know you have to get up close to fully appreciate condition and the extent of the inclusions.

I paid $13,000 for my Trakka 2 months ago .... by comparison in my view, buying a Telstra syncro and then adding everything to bring it up to the equivalent of a Trakka van is not an option. Would cost a small fortune, if you could still do it. My view is ... why try to re-invent the wheel? Trakka figured out how to do it in Oz. Capitalise on their expertise.

Like Kevin, I'm interested to hear members views about how non-difflock Syncros perform in sand ... I have yet to try it and at this stage, not too keen to try it on my own without some backup if I make a mess of it.

Last week here at my home beach I was watching three reversing 4WD's linked together with ropes, pulling nets full of sea mullet out of the water onto the beach. I mused .... could my Syncro do that?

Difflocks eh. Yes well it's a case of crawling before walking for me. Given time I'll find out if my non-difflock syncro is sufficient for my needs. Anyway, without difflocks, think how much fun and experience you guys will get pulling me out of my embarrasing stuff ups! ... lol

Cheers all.  Ken
