Questions

Hi Guys,
1.My fuel guage was only showing 3/4 full. My mechanic earthed the guage and it went to full, then had the fuel sender replaced. I then filled to the first click, but still only shows 3/4 full.

2.The temperature guage constantly shows beyond 1/2, wheras my 2WD struggles to go beyond 1/4. Had the engine rebuilt, and new coolant....the works. Is this common for Syncros?

3.Speedo needle bounces, even after new cable, and newish pinion shaft installed. I took the speedo to get repaired but showed nothing wrong when put on their machine. My mechanic still thinks it's the speedo.
Any clues?

Hi Gerald,
1. The first thing to be sure of with a syncro is that the tank is actually full at the first click. Every syncro I have ever filled clicks off the pump at 55-60liters. The tank shape and vent design is poor, sometimes parking with the RHR raised can help. My advise is run it down to empty (carry a jerry can) and fill. Its a 70 litre tank, I bet you don't get that much in.
P.S. The exact full mark should be reached with 55ohms not direct to earth.

2. My off the cuff response to you second statement would be your syncro needs a radiator and your 2wd needs a good quality thermostat.

3. If the gauge is tested good I would suspect two things. A. The cable has been fitted with too acute a bend or the pinion is stiff in its housing. Did you check the new cable for lube before fitting?

Hi Gerald,

VAG doesn’t get too many things wrong but they had brain fade with the Syncro fuel tank.  The venting of any fuel tank has to be from the very top.  If it isn’t, there will always be unfillable space in the tank and that’s exactly what happens in the Syncro.  There are vents in the top of the tank associated with the vapour retrieval system but they are very difficult to access.  I had mine made accessible when I had some work done some years ago and I intend to create a top-of-tank breathing system for it.  The only way to get a complete fill otherwise is to jack up the RH side by about six inches – which is a complete nonsense!

2. My off the cuff response to you second statement would be your syncro needs a radiator and your 2wd needs a good quality thermostat.

The first suspect in any temperature issue is always the thermostat.  Mine had a non-OEM thermostat that was slow and erratic.  I got an OEM (Behr) and it immediately became fast and stable.  Temperature gauges might or might not be accurate but any thermostat can be tested in the usual way – by putting it in a pot of water and increasing the temperature until it opens.  It is equally important that it closes at the right temperature.  This needs to be measured by a thermometer of known accuracy.  It is customary to verify the thermometer at boiling point.

Be aware also that the 2WD and the Syncro have different radiators – the Syncro radiator is considerably thicker (thus more coolant in it) than the 2WD.

Hi Les and Greg,

Thanks for your responses. I'm away till Friday and then I'll look into these issues further with my mechanic.

Gerald

The syncro and the 2WD radiators are the same for the 2.1. The thinner radiator is for the 1900.

In Australia. One of the upgrades we got as part of Aus delivery package, like the dust bowl/snorkel.

That's what I thought also, but Etka only lists the 068 121 253E thicker radiator for the MV engine.
There was a "B" and maybe a "C". The etk you gave me Phill is a 1990 edition I guess by then VW had figured out there was no point making a small radiator for the non a/con, cold climate cars. You may have to dig out your old microfiche to get to the bottom of it. The smart garages will only carry the large radiator as it can be retrofitted to 1.9l cars. The after market is not so smart and still produces various sizes smaller than the "E". GE

The thicker radiator is very hard to get. I tried but couldn't get one for a reasonable price. It looks like South Africa is the only option.

Phill,

I got mine from Van-Cafe about a year ago - In Alu. not copper.

Season's Greeting to all

Cheers,

Theo

Yes I think that they have the South African ones.
I have the same and bought them in SA of VW directly-

I love the light you get from them if the inner spotlights are installed-

Cheers and merry Christmas to you all-

P.s On the road to Fraser at the moment, was wondering if any other Syncronought is on the island or on the east coast for that matter-

Kind regards
Jens

Mmmmmm,

Very nice rig you have there Jens.

Love the SA grille and Project 2 fog lights plus the Westfalia camper roof & fit-out?

I would love to be heading for Fraser Island with you but work, tax, family and crank angle sensor issues have made sure that doesn't happen.

Merry Christmas and enjoy your travels - may they be incident free.

May all your greetings be well seasoned!

Cheers,

Skot

Ken, Peter,

Thanks for the Info, however I have a query. In the past, posting the core thickness of 50mm was mention for the Syncro. That's what I have, which is also a BEHR/HELLA brand. The SA One list 62mm core.  Is there a "fatter" one available?

Cheers,

Theo

Hi Theo,

It is a South African Behr/Hella.

Although it says 62mm my measurement of it shows 50mm which is 12mm thicker than the one currently in my Syncro.
