My K5 A590 cost less than $30 at the local engineering supplies about 3 years ago, has done a lot of miles since with no problem (touch wood).

Thanks for the links! An expensive over-torque I fear... I have contacted a couple of people selling syncro bits on ebay just in case!
Thanks
Nick

I have temporarily fixed it by thinning the bushes to get enough thread, but want to buy a replacement. Are the syncro ones the same as the standard T3 ones? Is it the sort of thing a wreckers would sell?

I'd like to come too, if I can.
I will finish work at Orange on the Monday before the trip, so if the weather is willing I could volunteer to do a recce of the route beforehand.
It might be more convenient for those travelling from Sydney to meet at Little Hartley or Hartley, although there is not much at either village except historic sites. They would need to fill up at Mt. Victoria.
I haven't got my head around the itinerary yet, but it looks like you were thinking of travelling via Jenolan Caves to Kanangra Walls.
Did you want to walk down to the lookouts and waterfalls at Kanangra Walls and camp there Friday night, or press on to the bush campsite at Dingo Dell, which would make for a fairly long day?
Last time I camped on the Kowmung was about ten years ago. The grades are fairly steep but the tracks were in good condition. The old splitty and the T2 coped with the steep Banshee trail - just! I believe that track is now closed, but there is an easier detour up the Bouchier fire trail.
From there it is an interesting drive down the old Colong Stock Route to the abandoned silver-mining town of Yerranderie. The stock route was pioneered by escaped convicts-come-cattle duffers and bushrangers dating back to the Wild Colonial Boy's time in the 1830's.
There is good camping at Yerranderie, or groups can hire the old Post Office for basic accommodation, so that should take care of Saturday night.
Yerranderie is very remote, because the Water Board and National Parks have blocked access from most directions, so you have to backtrack to the west.
Last time I was down that way we led an historical tour down Limeburner's track to Wombeyan Caves. It was a ripper of a track, but I hear it has since been closed. Will check if you like.
The quickest way back to Sydney from Yerranderie is via Limeburners or Wiaborough to Wombeyan Caves, then to Mittagong and Sydney. Although it doesn't look far on the map, it is very slow driving, with plenty of things to see, so don't expect to hit Mittagong and the freeway until late afternoon.
Those that didn't want to get back to Sydney on Sunday night could camp overnight at Wombeyan Caves or Wollondilly Station, both excellent spots, and go home on Monday.
The alternative is to avoid Wombeyan Caves and go through Taralga, although it is unlikely that the petrol pump will be open on Sunday. I will check if you like. Those in a hurry could rejoin the Hume Highway at Goulburn. Others could take the slower trip through Bannaby to Marulan (near Canyonleigh, as already suggested).
This was an old bullock-wagon track from the 1820's. Very scenic, and passable by conventional cars when dry, but impassable without chains and diff-locks after a few spits of rain. It passes a ghost-town called Bannaby then winds down the Swallowtail Pass to Tarlo Crossing, then over the Big Hill to Marulan.
If Swallowtail pass is closed, detour through Goulburn.
The nights in the high country will be very cold, so bring your beanie, scarf, gloves and long-johns. They didn't call it Mount Shivering for nothing!
Cheers, Roger (Beetle Bayley).

They have just said on the radio that the Wombeyan Caves - Mittagong road is closed at Goodmans Ford. Bit of a dispute between the local council and state government about who comes up with the $100k to fix it.Tue Apr 7, 2015 5:05 am (PDT) . Posted by:

Don't worry about undoing the hoses. Just undo the drain plugs under the
cylinder heads.

Managed to get a Unit joint kit from Hardy Spicer.
Mechanic fitted it to the problem end of the drive-shaft - I then
fitted the shaft to my sycnro and all is good - no more noise and nice
and smooth - very happy with the result.
I have the part number if anyone else needs one. Uni joint kit cost
about $45.00.
Hardy Spicer have outlets all over the place with lots on the east coast.
Cheers,
Skot
