Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Digest Number 3691

I looked into the rolling diameter of different tyres a few years ago, before replacing my worn-out 14" BFGs with 15" Firestones.

The information might be out of date now, but you can check it on the manufacturer's websites:

O.E. tyres (Australia) were Michelin X 185/80R14 or 205/70R14. I have not been able to determine the diameter, but they turned at 773 rpm (revolutions per mile). This is the yardstick.

My van had similar road-oriented tyres when I bought it, (670mm O.D.) and they were replaced with BFG 27x8.5x14 which turned at 782 rpm - a minor difference. They had 673 mm O.D.

Sadly those tyres are no longer imported, so when they wore out I bought some 15" rims and fitted Firestone Destination 205/70R15 with 689mm O.D. That's around 3% bigger.

I considered BFG 205/75R15 but was put off by reports of tyre rubbing. They are bigger again - 706mm, 748 rpm. That's 5% bigger than their little brothers.

GoWesty claims that they change gearing by 12% over the OE tyre (although U.S. vans have a taller FDR than ours). Go figger!

I noticed when I changed from BFG to Firestone that the van had much less rolling resistance, probably due to the stiffer sidewall and smoother tread. I could push the van around a lot easier over the pit, and fuel economy improved. But I have to use a lower gear on the mountain.

Cheers, Roger.

Made a very noticeable difference to power and braking. Doesn't like hills
- have to change back a gear where you never needed to before. Slower
pickup. Uses more petrol. Won't climb extremely steep gradients in Gelande
gear as well, especially with a full load. More stress on CV joints and
other components.

Greater unsprung weight has detrimental effect on ride and handling.

The only advantage is a small increase in ground clearance and a longer
footprint which is occasionally useful in extreme conditions. But you pay
for it the rest of the time.

Most people only went to 15" because BFG stopped sending them to Oz in 14".

If you could get decent 14" off-road tyres I would bolt them back on
tomorrow. The VW engineers knew what they were doing when they chose the
ratios ...

The ideal solution is to change your diff ratios to suit if you can't live with it. This will also counter any additional stress on the driveline but is a big undertaking. I normally like to try on a set to see how they are to live with before I buy them. Sometimes you can get some discarded tyres from a tyre shop for nothing but 215 75 15 is an uncommon size. Also you can buy cheap second hand on Ebay to try out the size. I don't have any to lend at the moment but someone may have some old ones. If you take out the tailshaft you can just put two on the back to see how the gearing and motor goes but wont tell you how the brakes feel.
Neil.

I expect that this has been discussed numerous times but just thought I'd ask anyway.
What are peoples experience been like going from standard 14" wheels to 15" and 215x75x15 BFG's?
With a standard 2.1 wbx engine. I have seen on other lists saying to expect a 9% loss in power, is this really that noticeble in a under powered car anyway...?
Thanks :)

By my calculation the difference is only 5%

Neil.

Made a very noticeable difference to power and braking. Doesn't like hills - have to change back a gear where you never needed to before. Slower pickup. Uses more petrol. Won't climb extremely steep gradients in Gelande gear as well, especially with a full load. More stress on CV joints and other components.
Greater unsprung weight has detrimental effect on ride and handling.
The only advantage is a small increase in ground clearance and a longer footprint which is occasionally useful in extreme conditions. But you pay for it the rest of the time.
Most people only went to 15" because BFG stopped sending them to Oz in 14".
If you could get decent 14" off-road tyres I would bolt them back on tomorrow. The VW engineers knew what they were doing when they chose the ratios ...

On our camper trailer we had 2 of 4kg bottles that I did not want to swap and go. I purchased one of these to refill them at home myself. I paid $100 for it a couple of years ago..

This way if I have a bottle that has some gas in it i.e. not completely mt but need a fill one to go away I don't give back that gas I just top up from a 9kg bottle...
You maybe able to use it for your Trakka bottles. ??

14" verse 15" Wheels

I expect that this has been discussed numerous times but just thought I'd ask anyway.
What are peoples experience been like going from standard 14" wheels to 15" and 215x75x15 BFG's?
With a standard 2.1 wbx engine. I have seen on other lists saying to expect a 9% loss in power, is this really that noticeble in a under powered car anyway...?
Thanks :)

US syncros have lower profile tyres than Australia hence the different FDR. When I researched tyre sizes I found the manufacturers specifications to be incorrect. This is why I actually measured rolling diameters on brand new tyres.

Interesting read Roger,

The spare on mine (caravelle) was a Michelin 205R14 (which is 80% side wall), based on the date code was the original spare. Mine also had 4 Michelin 205R14's on it when I bought it. This matches the placard inside the passenger door.

I run two sets of tires, 205/75R14 commercial tires for normal driving and 215/75R15 AT's for off road fun, so the road tires are a little smaller than stock, and the AT's a little larger.

I drive to the speedo on both sets of tires (so am a little slower actual speed on the road tires). Based on the speedo reading there is no real difference in economy.

A good gauge for me is the Gateway bridge (in Bris), it's a long straight climb at a constant incline, on the road tires I can just hold the speed limit (80kph) to the top, on the AT's I drop ~5-10kph by the top.

Thanks :)

Thanks :)

That's a good comparison Richard - gives us some real-world feedback.

Are you running BFG's on the 15" rims? Do they rub anywhere on the bodywork when travelling cross-country?

I measured my fuel consumption over a known distance - a 200km trip that I do regularly over a mixture of roads, from country highway to dirt, criss-crossing the Great Dividing Range between Goulburn and Bathurst via short-cuts and back-roads. That negated the difference in speedo reading.

There are plenty of steep climbs and sharp bends, and I have to change back to 2nd on a few of the steep pinches that I used to conquer in 3rd with the stock rims, which probably accounts for the extra fuel.

Great scenic drive through bushranger country, but unfortunately they keep improving the road, so now I have to take short-cuts to find enough dirt to make it fun.

One of my greatest joys is to pass everyone on the road when it snows. That's where the Syncro shows its balance and poise to great advantage over lesser 4WD's.

Excellent four-wheel-drifters in the snow or gravel.

Gotta keep up that momentum!

Roger.

Sounds like a wonderful trip Roger! Certainly what the Syncro's are built for. I still remember the first few off road trips in mine, and am still impressed with where it has taken me (as a novice off roader). Not been in the snow, but have done a lot of very loose gravel roads, both in 2WD and AWD. Whole world of difference to drive in AWD, and I guess like you see in the snow.

My setup is a little different as I have taken these from my T2 bus (figured I would wear the tires down before looking for something better). I have Merc rims, 6.5J15, ET49 with Yokohama Geolanders. This fitted nicely under the T2 with no body or suspension mods.

Have never rubbed anywhere, and have certainly bottomed the suspension front and rear in my travels.

Have heard good things on the Geolanders, but cannot say I have been impressed with them, mainly due to road noise, uneven wear pattern and they seem to be a magnet for picking up and holding onto small stones. They are quite old now, so probably no longer a current model

I should add on my fuel consumption, I have not done an indepth study, as in repeat a know trip etc, this is just watching each time I fill up. I don't have any "regular" runs, so my driving is always varied.

Richard

Hi all, just looking at the attached photo. It's a bit hard to read the name on the tyres, are they Geolanders and are they on the original 14" rims?

Andy

Yes Yokohama Geolander, 215/75R15's on Merc rims.

I painted the rims factory colour and put clips on them to take the original hub caps for a stock look.

Thanks Richard, great idea! Did you make up the clips or buy them it looks great. What offset are this rims?

Andy

Hey Andy,

The clips are early VW (used on wide 5 rims). It does not pull the hubcaps hard against the rim, so needs a bit of foam to keep it all firm. If you are handy and got some good spring steel you could make something a little better. The clips are held on with pop rivets (stainless)

The offset is not ideal (ET49, compared to 30 for stock). I got these for my T2 many years ago, and they fit a stock T2  without modification (only slight rubbing at full lock on the front only)

Richard

I too am running BFG 215-15s on my doka they rubbed the wheel arch in full lock when going over a kerb but new springs and shocks fixed that problem.
New problem. Some times it is impossible to select !st & reverse gear without great force could it be the slippers on the selector fork or that the fork is damaged, i had Paul Muller check it and he said that it was ok he installed grease to the gear stick, problem is still there.

Hey Richard I might have to give it a go, I've been wondering if it is possible to use the original hubcaps somehow on the merc rims, worth a try! I haven't fitted my wheels yet, still working out which tyres I want to run so I might try the clips first. My rims are et37 which is a bit closer to standard.
Andy

Hi Dale,

Best thing to do is get underneath and have a look at all the guides. Start from one end and follow it through, there are a number of guides that can wear. The most likely though is at the gear box end

Here's a kit of parts that can wear out (other vendors sell parts also)

Hi Andy, I will try and get some pictures for you

These are the clips, should be easy to get locally (I got mine from Mick Motors)

That would be great thanks
