If you definately know that it is BS, then bleeding will not fix it.

It sounds like the water level sensor is defective or needs cleaning.

hello All, well sory for the delay.
I ended up changing two units being both of which result in loosing some coolant and therefore requiring a coolant system bleed.
These were:
a) thermostat
b) thermo fan 2 stage activation switch (bottom left of passenger side of radiator)

My gut feeling is the cause was (b) where the stage 1 fan cycle was not cutting in as now when in the drive way and runnung after warmed up you can hear a fan kicking in all the time - but as i hate working on coolant issues i decided to do both. I dont think it was (A) because warm water (ie the thermostat had opened) adventually easly flowed out of the radiator bleed screw.

Yesterday took it for a drive in the sand for about 2 hrs afterwards and the temp guage needle sat just to the right of the little red temp warning light and didnt move from there. (previously it went off the clock with the red light flashing.)
My kombi always has its own mysterious way but it always gets me home safely even though it is long in the tooth now.

All the best.
Hamish
