S[pare Wheel carrier

Hi From Beautiful Sunny Mallacoota

Can anyone advise me about the possibilities  of a spare wheel carrier on my front bull bar. Is there another member out there who has fitted out such a rig. I have 4 x 15'' Wheels (6 1/2" x 15"H2, ET 37 2104000202). I think they are Merc? I'am searching for a another as the spare if anyone can help.

This size just doesn't fit in the front spare tyre well. I've looked at Unklekenz BFG  fit out shots and diameter is not the problem but width of the tyre/wheel is. It presses up against those big fat coolant hoses.

I'am concerned that by mounting it on the front bull bar it might impede air flow to the radiator. Is there any anecdotal evidence of this?
I could mount the spare wheel with one of those rear facing spare wheel carriers but I feel that this impedes easy access to the rear tail gate. Any suggestions ideas most welcome.

Michael

Michael, my syncro had a steel bullbar on it when i bought with a front mounted spare. Even on hot days the fan didn't seem to come on any more often  even though the wheel definitely impeded airflow.

I removed the bullbar because I just didn't like the look of the wheel up front and it made keeping the car clean harder because you have to reach behind the wheel to wash the grill etc. This was only with a 14" spare also.

That does sound like a Merc rim off a c class, same as I have, there are a couple of different versions that all look very similar keep any eye on ebay, i'll go halves with you on a set if you find one! From memory mine are 31 offset though.

I'll have to check my part nos if i ever get it back from the diesel repairer...

Michael,

Mounting on the bull bar isn’t the best place and it certainly impedes the airflow into the radiator.

You can fit the tyre in the original location by dropping the hinges of the wheel carrier by about 20-25mm and avoid crushing the hoses or interfering with the steering.  You need to drop the catch by the same amount, of course.

I have been meaning to do this to mine since I got the 15” wheels but haven’t done so yet.

Les

Great tip thanks Les. I am moving to 15” when I can decide what alloys and tyres to get.

I have managed to get my 15" spare in the holder doing what you have suggested Les. (dropping the wheel career 20 - 25mm). Now I would like to lift my standard vehicle 25mm+ if thats possible and if so wondering about the most cost effective way to do it. Does anyone have an opinion? Greg

And this is how it would look with spotlights (easy to mount) and the ends that Les talks about. The large VW badge covers a fitting which allows a spare wheel to be mounted although having used it I would prefer the plate to be on the bar below as the tyre obscures vision when mounted. Perhaps the orginal owner was worried about blocking radiator intakes. They also had to put on the additional indicator lights similar to the Tralkka ones.
Look forward to the other Valla pictures.

Drove back from Perth(to Melbourne) when I first bought the car in 2003 with the spare mounted on front as attached without any cooling problems from blocked cooling but some problems with blocked vision .(Came back with 12 wheels -6x 14" and  6 x16"  = 4 on van, 2 on rear carrier, 1 on bull bar, 1 on moulding in roof rack, 1 in spare wheel carrier under front and 3 inside. Needless to say I didn't get 1 puncture!)
Last Christmas I also flagged that my brother had these Audi 15" wheels in attachment which he was looking for $150 for 4 but think he may have more. He is away at the moment but back mid Sept. if you are not in a hurry.

Thanks Roger. Was that a 14" or 15" tyre mounted on the front. How much did it obscure your vision.

Thanks Greg -Michael and others,
That's the beauty of this site -if you post the factual details of something without making claims that can't be verified someone generally will have the knowledge needed to allow an informed decision. In the case of my brother's Audi wheels they should obviously go back under his house for non Syncro T3 applications. He wasn't trying to sell them but when he mentioned them it had the possibility to help both sides.
I found my16" (not 15") wheel detracted from my vision but have never tried the 14" ones. I have a set of 6 x14" syncro wheels in good condition if someone wanted to use the centres.(5 have barely roadworthy Michelin X tyres on them.I can't see myself using them as I am very happy with my 16" factory syncro ones and the tyre range is much more comprehensive.
I will try to mount and photograph the 2 sizes on the front bull bar but we are promised continuing rain in Melbourne until Sunday. It should be possible to weld a vertical bar between the horizontal ones of a bull bar to determine the optimum vision/cooling balance. My journey back across the Nullabor with the wheel thus mounted was in October not mid Summer. My wife has also just broken her leg which has me running around in my Florence Nightingale outfit and makes our booking to go to Europe next month look increasingly sad. Its times like this that a bloke needs his Syncro.

Hi Roger, sorry to hear about your wife's leg, I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

I've seen those Audi wheels on T2s but with the centres bored out, don't look great plus the inevitable disintegration problem might get tiring.

Might be interested in a group buy of 15s myself Michael but not immediately. My diesel pump woes are not improving.

Cheers
Roger

Cheers

Regards

Michael

Hi michael. Here's a picture of the spare tire carrier I made for my syncro incase you are after any ideas.  I simply used an axle stub/hub from a wrecked t2 kombi and welded it to two lengths of steel square tube. It's attached using stainless u-bolts so there's no holes or welding to the bullbar and easy to remove when I don't need it. In the pictures it's mounted a little high as I have 30x9.5x15. Very easy to make one of these and extremely sturdy. erik

Hey michael. They are south african 15" rhein alloys I bought from van-cafe.com. Purpose built for the syncro they have perfect offset and a high load rating. Downside is they are expensive compared to steel rims. I'm sure the spare tire would steal away some potential direct airflow to the radiator but through my own paranoid testing in hot conditions there is absolutely no noticeable difference in running temperatures with or without the spare wheel up front.

Cheers
Roger

Regards

Michael

They look terrific. Are they as strong as steel, eg like on heavily corrugated outback roads?

Hey michael. They are south african 15" rhein alloys I bought from van-cafe.com. Purpose built for the syncro they have perfect offset and a high load rating. Downside is they are expensive compared to steel rims. I'm sure the spare tire would steal away some potential direct airflow to the radiator but through my own paranoid testing in hot conditions there is absolutely no noticeable difference in running temperatures with or without the spare wheel up front.

Thanks Erik.

Whats the size of that wheel and can you tell me where you got them from. They look great. Have you experienced problems with air flow to the radiator. Like Roger due you experience visibility distraction problem?

Very easy to make one of these and extremely sturdy. erik

Cheers

And this is how it would look with spotlights (easy to mount) and the ends that Les talks about. The large VW badge covers a fitting which allows a spare wheel to be mounted although having used it I would prefer the plate to be on the bar below as the tyre obscures vision when mounted. Perhaps the orginal owner was worried about blocking radiator intakes. They also had to put on the additional indicator lights similar to the Tralkka ones.
Look forward to the other Valla pictures.
Cheers

I'm not sure how they compare with steel rims directly. Steel rims being bendy and aluminum brittle means atleast you can straighten out a buckled steel wheel. That said they are much thicker than any other alloy wheel I have looked over and unlike many alloys on the market for sedans you can be confident they have sufficient load rating for the syncro. I do know these are very common on the south african syncros for obvious reasons and have not heard anything negative on their performance offroad. I for one have not put them through thousands of kilometers of corrugations but I will be going on a 50,000km round trip of australia come end of year with the intent on driving most of the rugged 4x4 tracks australia has to offer. Can get back to you after if your still deciding:-P.
