Michael,
Mounting on the bull bar isn’t the best place and it certainly impedes the airflow into the radiator.
You can fit the tyre in the original location by dropping the hinges of the wheel carrier by about 20-25mm and avoid crushing the hoses or interfering with the steering. You need to drop the catch by the same amount, of course.
I have been meaning to do this to mine since I got the 15” wheels but haven’t done so yet.

S[pare Wheel carrier
Hi From Beautiful Sunny Mallacoota
Can anyone advise me about the possibilities of a spare wheel carrier on my front bull bar. Is there another member out there who has fitted out such a rig. I have 4 x 15'' Wheels (6 1/2" x 15"H2, ET 37 2104000202). I think they are Merc? I'am searching for another as the spare if anyone can help.

Great tip thanks Les. I am moving to 15” when I can decide what alloys and tyres to get.

That's the beauty of this site -if you post the factual details of something without making claims that can't be verified someone generally will have the knowledge needed to allow an informed decision. In the case of my brother's Audi wheels they should obviously go back under his house for non Syncro T3 applications. He wasn't trying to sell them but when he mentioned them it had the possibility to help both sides.
I found my16" (not 15") wheel detracted from my vision but have never tried the 14" ones. I have a set of 6 x14" syncro wheels in good condition if someone wanted to use the centres.(5 have barely roadworthy Michelin X tyres on them.I can't see myself using them as I am very happy with my 16" factory syncro ones and the tyre range is much more comprehensive.
I will try to mount and photograph the 2 sizes on the front bull bar but we are promised continuing rain in Melbourne until Sunday. It should be possible to weld a vertical bar between the horizontal ones of a bull bar to determine the optimum vision/cooling balance. My journey back across the Nullabor with the wheel thus mounted was in October not mid Summer. My wife has also just broken her leg which has me running around in my Florence Nightingale outfit and makes our booking to go to Europe next month look increasingly sad. Its times like this that a bloke needs his Syncro.

And this is how it would look with spotlights (easy to mount) and the ends that Les talks about. The large VW badge covers a fitting which allows a spare wheel to be mounted although having used it I would prefer the plate to be on the bar below as the tyre obscures vision when mounted. Perhaps the orginal owner was worried about blocking radiator intakes. They also had to put on the additional indicator lights similar to the Tralkka ones.Look forward to the other Valla pictures.CheersRogerDrove back from Perth(to Melbourne) when I first bought the car in 2003 with the spare mounted on front as attached without any cooling problems from blocked cooling but some problems with blocked vision .(Came back with 12 wheels -6x 14" and 6 x16" = 4 on van, 2 on rear carrier, 1 on bull bar, 1 on moulding in roof rack, 1 in spare wheel carrier under front and 3 inside. Very easy to make one of these and extremely sturdy. erik

Hi michael. Here's a picture of the spare tire carrier I made for my syncro incase you are after any ideas. I simply used an axle stub/hub from a wrecked t2 kombi and welded it to two lengths of steel square tube. It's attached using stainless u-bolts so there's no holes or welding to the bullbar and easy to remove when I don't need it. In the pictures it's mounted a little high as I have 30x9.5x15. Very easy to make one of these and extremely sturdy. erik

Needless to say I didn't get 1 puncture!)Last Christmas I also flagged that my brother had these Audi 15" wheels in attachment which he was looking for $150 for 4 but think he may have more. He is away at the moment but back mid Sept. if you are not in a hurry.CheersRoger

Hi From Beautiful Sunny MallacootaCan anyone advise me about the possibilities of a spare wheel carrier on my front bull bar. Is there another member out there who has fitted out such a rig. I have 4 x 15'' Wheels (6 1/2" x 15"H2, ET 37 2104000202). I think they are Merc? I'am searching for a another as the spare if anyone can help. This size just doesn't fit in the front spare tyre well. I've looked at Unklekenz BFG fit out shots and diameter is not the problem but width of the tyre/wheel is. It presses up against those big fat coolant hoses.I'am concerned that by mounting it on the front bull bar it might impede air flow to the radiator. Is there any anecdotal evidence of this?I could mount the spare wheel with one of those rear facing spare wheel carriers but I feel that this impedes easy access to the rear tail gate. Any suggestions ideas most welcome.Regards
Michael

Hey michael. They are south african 15" rhein alloys I bought from van-cafe.com. Purpose built for the syncro they have perfect offset and a high load rating. Downside is they are expensive compared to steel rims. I'm sure the spare tire would steal away some potential direct airflow to the radiator but through my own paranoid testing in hot conditions there is absolutely no noticeable difference in running temperatures with or without the spare wheel up front.
