Shear Bolt

Hello, does anyone know the reason there is are shear bolts on the steering column?

Is it safety in case of an accident or is it to do with theft of the vehicle or neither.
I ask because I need to remove the dash and have read elsewhere that people put back the steering column using a normal metal bolt. regards Greg

Greg,

Without going out in the cold and wet to have a look, it is usually a part of passenger safety design.  It decouples the upper part of the steering column early in the crush/crumple phase of frontal impact.

It's a while since I pulled one apart Greg, but from memory I think I had no trouble undoing them with and "Ezy-out".

                                                 Cheers, Roger [Beetle].

Thanks Roger, I have just ordered a couple of the shear bolts through our local VW dealer for $6.50 ea.

it's been debated forever.
I think they are designed to shear off in an front end collision,
to help keep the steering column from impaling the driver.

the 'theft theory' doesn't make sense,  since they have nothing to do with overpowering the steering lock and ignition switch.
but 'calibrated break-away bolts'  make sense,
if you are talking about the shear bolts I think you are.

I undo them with a centre punch. Much quicker than drilling. They are an anti theft device, as once removed you are able to gain steering control, although very limited, even though the steering lock is engaged. Considering the age of the car and the methods employed by today's thieves no one is going to undo bolts to steal one. They are more likely to break a window and slide hammer the barrel than show such finesse as removing a bolt. So I fit normal bolts. Greg E

I have just collected my shear bolts for the steering column from the local VW dealer. they aren't what I expected and I just wanted to check I have the right thing.

These are made of metal (I thought for some reason they would be nylon).

They have a head that an allen key fits into (I am sure these have a name).

and under the head they have an odd shape that starts narrow at the top and widens at the base. Presumably the head breaks off as you tighten them into place. (is this right.)

That is correct, the head will shear off when tightened. Thats why they are shear bolts, none of that crash bs. Greg E

you got it.
Designed for the top part of the head to break off when you tighten it.

surprised they are even available.
what did they cost ? if you don't mind saying.

they wouldn't be nylon, especially  for the era of when they first started using that part.
and the shear strength of that diameter nylon would be near zilch.

like a gallon of gas each then, roughly, I take it.

gas where I am is currently $ 4.25 US per US gallon.

not hard to think of things in terms of how much gas what they cost will buy. Kinda fun actually.
