Michael,
There has been correspondence on the group recently about freighting from various countries, including the US , to Australia . Have a quick check back through the postings.
Les

Dear Michael,
Just a few principles that may be helpful.
If you can fill a full container yourself (or with friends) you will get the best rates from shipping or airline companies.
This is basically what freight consolidators/forwarders do namely buy by the container load and then resell at a rate between what they pay and what the market will bear/level of competition. (Air cargo also goes in containers(called unit load devices)
The cheapest rate may leave you waiting a long while whilst a consolidator gets enough freight to fill the container or may involve a number of transhipments which are more likely to damage or lose your goods.Check how often they consolidate to Melbourne. Weekly?Monthly? Rarely?
A CIF or CIP Melbourne price is a price that includes all charges up to arrival at Melbourne Port/Airport. It does not include unloading, customs clearance, any duty and delivery.
CFR or CPT Melbourne is the same thing without any insurance cover.
If you want a price delivered to you It is DDP(delivered Duty Paid) or DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) wherever you live.ie if you live outside Melbourne make sure your quote is your named town otherwise the carrier probably charge you extra. You would need a consolidator who has an associate company or agent in Melbourne as well as Canada to get such a "delivered"quote plus "deconsolidate" your cargo when it arrives.
Look up Freight Forwarders in the yellow pages and get a few quotes bearing the above in mind. They will usually offer advice plus extra services like export documentation, insurance, packing and fumigation. The latter is usually cheaper done on export rather than relying on the Australian Quarantine Service (AQUIS) but depending on the goods and packaging may not be necessary. Some forwarders choose to quote a higher freight rate but it is inclusive of all/some of these charges so check what you are getting for your money.
Sea freight is usually cheaper/slower Airfreight quicker more expensive.
Hope that helps you compare apples with apples. Good luck. Roger
