Side Glass

Does anyone happen to have a loose genuine side glass from a T3?

I want to establish the top to bottom measurement so that I can compare it with the after-market sliding window in mine.  There is a problem with the fit of the seal around the window, such that the top corners are "sucked in", thus providing a water path that has rusted the lower flange on one side of mine.

Knowing the depth of either the genuine sliding side window or genuine flat glass would help.

Thanks

Les
Les,

Your window is probably a Kingsley. The radii at the corners is wrong. This is how they were made. You can put up with it, get a genuine slider from a Caravelle or the original fixed.

The vertical measurement is OK.

Phill,

The radius of the flange is a poofteenth over 45mm.  If it was made in Imperial, it was probably 1 13/16".  Can't see any manufacturers name on it.  It was part of the Trakka conversion for 88/89.

Kingsley made them for Trakka as far as I know.

Do any of the Melbourne Syncro owners have a genuine side sliding glass window?  Measuring an installed glass might help me sort out this fit problem.

Les, mine has a sliding glass window installed in the driver’s side middle window but I’m not sure if it is genuine or aftermarket. You are welcome to have a look or I could take detailed photos if that would help?

Gary,

It's hard to tell the difference between genuine and aftermarket.  The higher level T3's came with the factory sliding windows but upgrades from the basic models usually used the local aftermarket window.  Let's see if anyone else replies.  If I don't get any more information, I will come and look at yours.  I want to compare the corner radius and diagonal measurement over the corners.

Phill believes there is a difference at least in the corner radius, which can result in the corners of the seal falling in, giving the "sucked in" appearance.  Mine are like this on both sides and this let water in behind the seal on one side.  This resulted in rust on the lower vertical flange.  I have removed the rust but don't want to reinstall the window until I have a better idea of why the seal did not fit in the first place.

As an aside, I have found a brilliant rust remover called Deox Gel.  It dissolves the rust and gets back to bright, shiny metal.  I have never seen anything like this before.  It is slow, due mainly to the outside ambient being in the 2 - 15 degree range at the moment, but it is very certain.

If the window frame is black, then it is a locally made window.

All Caravelle windows were silver.

Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Side Glass
There is a caravelle I pass in a street near me, I’ll have a look and compare. My window has a built in stainless fly screen so maybe that suggests it is an aftermarket one and my van is definitely a pretty basic model (no rear heated screen, wiper etc). The other windows are def aftermarket and have rubbish seals.

You could always pop round the corner and look at Roger Bell’s as well if you did come up to the inner north. Not sure what he has window wise.

You’d be swimming in tea after visiting us both!

The rust goo sounds good.

I had a dodgy window installed in my slider originally and replaced
it with a factory caravelle slider from a wrecker in Sydney. Prior to
that I almost bought a factory slider from an 85 model which is
larger in length than the later models. Be careful not to do that if
you are buying another window. The drivers side slider has the same
issue (85 and earlier models are slightly longer) (by about an inch)
and I can understand why they would make this change mid model?

Good luck with the window seal.

Cheers,

Scott

All Caravelle windows were silver.

Phill,

All our US spec Vanagons after late 1987-91, came with black window frames.
We only got sliding windows on the middle.  Fixed glass was not offered here.
Ironically there are some people like myself who prefer to have fixed windows
front-to-back. AC is common on post 86 Vanagons here. Besides the climate
in the San Francisco area is mild almost all year.

As for the corners caving in, it is rare in factory window installations though I have
seen one or two which have done that. We did not have any aftermarket windows
available here. Two types of sliders were offered. The Westfalia versions which had
sliding panel about 2/3 the width of the window vs. the normal 50/50 on regular vans.

Used prices for sliders in my area is $20-$80 with most in the $40 range. The black
frame versions command the higher prices.

Above figures in US Dollars, of course.

All of our Vanagon windows were fixed glass with black rubbers.

Very rare here. Would be less than 10 in Australia.

You see that? They send them where there are not wanted. I want them here.
VW always sends us things we don't want or need. I'll bet that fellow in Alaska
isn't so thrilled with his AC either. At least he can slide his window open when
a bear comes knocking on other side of the van.=)

It seems ludicrous since you probably have more of a need for them than we do.
This is probably due to pricing strategy. I noticed that VW did something similar
in Asia. They sent the base models there (compared to options loaded ones here).
When I saw a friend's I was quite impressed with some of the unusual features. As
it turns out, these vans are sent there with minimal equipment and fitted by local
dealers/companies with things like overhead AC (with 6 vents) and leather seats
similar in look to the Audi seats of the period. If you look closely at the photos,
you might notice that the fronts are original base Vanagon seats which have been
reuphostered. The dead giveaway are the seatback pivot points. Here's the pics I
took of my friend Kraisorn's van.

I've just looked at my window and found it has "Pilkington, Made in Australia" on it. The original windows have VW/Audi logos.
