I got this one here last year. It's made in Germany, made of powder coated stainless steel, adjusted by two hardened bolts and it works just great!
I paid about 700 incl. postage to Alice Springs (might be cheaper to coastline or elsewhere! I needed stronger struts, you could get them quite cheap from GoWesty or Van Cafe. Otherwise it won't lift the spare wheel.
It handles corrugations very well, the car jack is out of the way.
Michael Freitag, the owner and builder of the carrier is happy to construct (at least tries ;-) everything you want.
Check out his homepage and get a quote.

You can tell him my name, he might remember me. I am german, living in Alice Springs.
Cheers
Seb
This looks straight forward and effective, curious to know if this bloke speaks english or I can look at his site in english.
Also wondering if you put stronger stutts on the tailgate as you have done can you open and close the tailgate without too much effort when the wheel and rack are not fitted to the van. I ask this because I only want the rack on when I am needing to carry 2 spares on a long journey. Regards Greg

It's still possible to pull down the tailgate. It needs a little bit of effort, depends how often you do it.
By the way, it's only with a heavy 15inch rim and offroad tyre. A normal rim is fine with 800nm struts (genuine is 640), i have 1200nm for heavy duty.
It's 3 Minutes work to change the struts, if you just driving a couple of long journeys a year
Cheers

I have added some older photos from Fraser Island with the Tiguan wheels to the photos with the spare wheel carriers.
The carriers were $640 for 2 and $320 postage. They have increased a little over recent months.

My pop-top Syncro weighs 2100kg and I was happy with the tyres. They took us on the beach with no dramas and were excellent on the road. However I was looking for something of an all rounder so i went with the Yokohama Geolander ATS (800kg) before I headed to Fraser Island in Dec and I've be very happy with those.
i like the Tiguan wheel as they have a ET33 and they are made by VW. I bought 2 sets to get 2 spares I sold one of the extras to Steve A and have one left.
Hope this Helps
