All, at the risk of opening a can of worms can anyone shed some light on the correct bosch spark plug for the mv engine. The listing on the Australian bosch web site specifies different plugs for the dj and the mv. WR7CC and WR7CP for the MV - WR7DC+ and WR7DP for the DJ. The listing in the local parts stores only shows the DJ engine. I wanted to try the WR7CP but no one stocks them. The difference seems to be that the DJ plugs are the projecting type, considering this is a higher compression engine and there is no plug - piston contact can you fit these to a MV? Has anyone been through all this before and can shed some light. TIA. Greg E
Just buy them from a VW specialist or genuine.
Mine are W7CCO

Greg, I just replaced mine with whatever the bosch catalogue said at my local supercheapauto.I went for the more pricey "platinum"? plugs and they seem to give the bus some more go.Can't remember the codes though.Failing those, the correct plug in an NGK is B6ES -have piles of old ones lying round.

I have run extended tip spark plugs in a 2.1 MV engine without
problems.
turn the engine over by hand first to be sure ..
but there's no risk that I am aware of.
I'm partial to NGK spark plugs too.
Generally....I find that spark plugs last semi-indefinitely in T3
waterboxer engines.

Hey Phill, Genuine seems to be the only source of w7cco now (especially made in Germany). The w7cc seems to be available but not very good. I ended up using bp6es ngk plugs(should be b6es). I cant see why vw don't recommend projector plugs in the mv. The guys on the samba seem to have come to the conclusion that bp6et is the best (tripple electrode). I cant find these in Aus. In any case that dill in Cairns put bp5es (bay window plugs) in the car and the timing was massively retarded so she should run sweet now. Greg and All,
This is another can-o-worms topic and the more online research one does ... the more confusing it seems to get. Not hard to arrive at an array of mixed plug selections.
I presently have NGK BP6ES installed, I believe I bought these quite some time ago from my local mechanic who services VW and other brands. I have them simply because that was what I was offered.
Yet someone else said here previously they use NGK B6ES. Another person I spoke to today said they use NGK BPR6ES. What's going on? On what basis are these selected?
Apparently the above NGK brand plugs are classified as "Standard" plugs, meaning one can then mull over whether or not to seek a higher grade of plug that might be labelled "PREMIUM", 'ULTRA", "PLATINUM", "IRIDIAM" etc. Interestingly some people disparagingly describe as "snake oil" the "Ultimate Class" of the USA sourced "PULSTAR Iridium Pulse Plug" found at the attached link ...
Goto: http://www.sparkplugs.com/results_app.asp?productTypeID=1&AAIA=1409329 . Utube videos for the PULSTAR Pulse plugs are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxATM56b2eg&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx1WVM4PKjM .
Interestingly though but subject to confirmation, it's possible that this model plug comes with a solid terminal nut which would be unsuitable for our vans anyway as the plug type we use needs to have the nut removed to fit to the smaller threaded terminal. That list at least shows a range of other brands and models of claimed "suitable" plugs for the WBX2.1 motor.
Online, many posts referencing CHAMPION brand is that they are rubbish and stated their model for the WBX 2.1 is NLA anyway. Unconfirmed by me on both matters.
I've always carried with me a reference to a BERU ULTRA R0 501 W7 CCO plug but I can't recall if I've ever used it. Yesterday I found an online reference for the WBX 2.1 as being a BERU ULTRA Z58 14-7CU. Adds to the confusion. When I go looking online for a local source of BERU plugs ... it seems quite impossible to source.
Then again, is it the case that the VW supplied "genuine" plug is in fact the BERU brand W7 CCO plug? Or is it a BOSCH or some other brand?
Surely there has to be a simple solution to all of this. Really, we just want to know what plugs are most suited for the WBX 2.1 motor for the average user operating in average OZ climate conditions.
So can anyone shed some light into the murky depths of spark plug selection? Any chance of a short list of say just 2 plug recommendations for just 2 categories of "Standard" and "Premium" grade spark plugs? Then we can all simply move on from this and onto another can-o-worms topic instead. TIA.
Cheers.

Ken, The most important answer first - you have in the bp6es a good plug for the wbx (imo). The b6es is technically the right plug for a mv but this plug has its electrode "hidden" inside the spark plug. I can't see why a projector is o.k. on an engine (dj) that is essentially identical other than a higher compression ratio. The other way round would make more sense to me. I would not go for the bpr6es as we already have suppression (resistance) in our high tension leads. As far as champion plugs go, I have never seen a good one. In fact I have pulled loads out of boxes that don't work!!! Vw have used Beru, bosch and ngk as genuine fitment. I don't know the correct number for the beru plugs, but what I can tell you is I have not seen them for sale outside VW dealers in Aus. I did want to try the platinum plugs (wr7dp) but the
guys on the samba that have, removed them and refitted bp6et or w7cco. So basically if your plugs are less than 20,000km old let sleeping dogs lie.

Maybe for third world fuel???
(To stop pre ignition.)
I think it must be Phill. I think they just wanted to have two engines, one for known good fuel areas (Europe) and one for poor fuel (Aus, Africa and Americas). Greg E--- On Mon, 3/1/11, plander@optusnet.com.au <plander@optusnet.com.au> wrote: |

they've gotten bigger...
but no real spark plug problems ever...

'eventually' ...new ones are needed.
I have boxes full of Bosch spark plugs with tens of thousands of miles left
on them..
I don't find that they even wear much at all. I carry maybe a spare plug
or two on major trips.
I would expect about 5 years out of a good set of Bosch plugs.
if you want to be 'exotic' consider going to Platinum spark plugs. I don't
usually bother on waterboxer engines...haven't found that it makes much
difference.
