Subaru engine conversion

Thank you Mark and Skot for that info. No wonder - with those big tyres approx. 740mmø - you don’t need to change to the 4th gear.

My tyres are 205/75/15 but only 680mmø. My conundrum: Get bigger tyres or change the gears. But where would I put the spare?

Cheers,

Theo

I left my gears as is with Subaru 2.5. With 235/75/15 tires it's pretty spot on. Seems to rev a bit high in 4th but you don't need to change down so often. Makes for a good commuter too. Often I just use 2nd and 4th around town.

The speedo is also spot on with these tires.

Mark

Put the spare on the back :)

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Theo,
I meant to reply to your post awhile back but life got in the way.
I had a Subi 2.5 transplant in my Syncro late last year, very happy with the result, so nice to drive now, very responsive and the engine looks like its meant to be there, fits so well!
I also went with Smallcars bell housing, Reverse coolant manifold, Syncro engine mount and Stainless exhaust.
I got my gearbox done by Ron Schmidt in Kempsey, very happy with his service! New Crownwheel and Pinion, slightly taller 3rd and 4th gears, Oiling plates, Decoupler and some other things that he does to make it more ‘bullet proof’. I’ll look for his email and list some more details if you would like.
All the best Theo.

Cheers, Andy Sinclair

Hi Andy,

Thank you for letting me know what you did. Rudi will have look at my GB and then decide what to do. New gears or bigger tyres.

I wouldn’t mind getting some more info.

Cheers, Theo

Hi All,

Update on my conversion.

Miles at AM Auto Services fixed most of the niggly bits at no cost.

I just need to get some miles done, to find out what petrol mileage I get out of it.

Not sure what to do about my LPG set up. A M Auto Services does not recommend it in a Subaru engine.

UWE is happy with his setup. Is there anyone else on this Forum with a Subaru conversion and running on LPG ??

Cheers,

Theo

Hi Theo,

Glad to hear you are getting things sorted out. Did they get the clutch sorted out also?

Not that I have personal experience with LPG, but I don't think it would be recommended for a WBX either, yet plenty have run it. I think it comes down to your preference, and accepting in the long run it will lower the life of the engine a little.

Also keep an eye on cooling system temps as the LPG can add a little more heat in the system.

If your not busy Sunday, it might worth a trip down to Eagle Farm, RACQ Motor Fest is on. It's not a specific show on VW or German cars, just a general show on old cars, but worth a look if you like old cars.

Richard

Hi Richard,

Yes the clutch is OK now, adjusted the clevis above the master cylinder.

I saw the Ad in the RACQ shop, the best way for me to get there would be by train.

Theo

Hi Theo,

Glad you're getting the bugs out of the conversion, I think its worth the effort in the long run just from the low cost availability of engines and parts. I've gone a little further down the Subaru path and thrown in a Subaru gearbox as well from Todd at http://www.subarugears.com/ in Sydney, no "G"elande gear just AWD at this point but hope to make use of the Subaru dual range box to get close to G gear ratios.

I'm currently in Broken Hill clocking up some K's and all is going well, the LPG is still working great with no issues, its an electronic injector system which I think you have as well from memory, I get about 400km out of a 70L lpg tank under the rear seat and then I still have a full petrol tank as well which gives great range but I usually just refill LPG along the way.

So just confirming that LPG on the 2.5l SOHC Subaru works well.

Cheers, Uwe

Great to hear on the clutch Theo.

Are you not able to drive at the moment, or is the train just the easiest way for you?

I was planning to go there in the 411, but never realised you needed to pre-book to display your car, so not as keen anymore. If you want to go, an option would be catch the train to Virginia or Northgate, I could pick you up from there on the way through?

Richard

Hi Richard,

The train is more convenient - no parking problems.

How would we coordinate a pickup time from Northgate with the train being not always dependable?

Hi Theo, I can give you a call tomorrow am to discuss, as long as I know which train your on I can be at the station if you . Hopefully the trains are on time!

Northgate is probably the easiest, but you have a staircase from the platform up and over the tracks.

Hopefully parking is easy there, just wanted the excuse to take the 411 for a spin

Richard
