Syncro Beetle saves T1

This ones for you Jens, back in the old hood, found it on the bulli de site after using the bing translator and in broken English translation said it was a syncro beetle. Was actually surfing after Checking out the b32 transporter but that's another story

Pete

That b32 / turbo T3 thing is worth an own thread!
I saw one in Munich a few years back, a different thing under the hood altogether!

Enjoy the search, not much info around because only 12 ever built or something!

If you are talking about the red Porsche engined van that Steve Muller owned it wasn't a B32. Hamish bought it and stripped the westy roof of it. It was a works support car for the Dakar. I would be very surprised if there was a rhd B32 let alone one in Australia.

I don't know why it ended up here, may have been used as  a support vehicle here but from what Steve told me it was one of maybe three built to support the factory team. So factory fitted in that it would have been modified in the works shop. Hamish probably knows more. The remains are probably still in his yard!

No as far as I know it was never registered in Australia.

Peter,

The red porsche Westphalia 2wd had a 2.7 6cyl old school donk. My mechic got it going ad remove it from the van then it went up to be a donor for Hamish's syncro.

The engine is now back in a porsche ~ 84 modelish.

Cheers,

Skot

that thing has an estimated marked value of 65 000 €, it was double the price of an 911 back in 1984....

That b32 / turbo T3 thing is worth an own thread!
I saw one in Munich a few years back, a different thing under the hood altogether!

Enjoy the search, not much info around because only 12 ever built or something!

Sorry I haven't a picture of the engine installation.
You can get a vague idea from side on and rear.

Engine was installed as low as I thought both practical and dynamically sound.
I went for practical ground clearance but wanted the centre of mass in line with or below the wheel centres.
I fabricated the engine cover and it protrudes up, practically in line with the folded GL rear seat surface.

The brakes are Oettinger, wheels are Simmons and the tyres are currently speed / load rated Michelins.
She has SS long range fuel tanks in the belly and the standard tank was height extended, all are plumbed together and filled from the standard 2WD filler giving me about 140 litres of ideally 98 octane.

She does:
60 Km/h in first, 105 in second, 160 in third, 210 in 4th and you can only dream about the 250 in 5th.
She pulls without snatch from a little above 30 Km/h in 5th.
I am not confessing how fast I have driven her, but as with all Kombis she is badly wind affected, so safety first.
I'd love to try her out on an A380 certified airport runway on a still morning.

She no longer has these number plates as I gave them up with the business.

Â

You may be interested: I also have an imitation one.

I went to Germany in the hope of buying one back in the 80s.
The Porsche factory people looked puzzled at me when I asked about them.

So Mark Hammond and Michael Newton built me one in the mid 90s.

My "Bergmeister" is an improvement on the 3.2 factory cars, because we could not find a good 3.2 to use.
We fitted an '89 3.6 with a G50 box with LSD to my, from new, 1982 air cooled T3.
It has the necessary engineer's certificates and is a breathtakingly effortless driver.
Some of you may have seen it because mark Hammond was my VW T3 fleet mechanic for many years till he retired.

Peter
