Syncro Internal Spare Wheel?

Phill,

My T2 had the spare recessed into the engine compartment on the left hand side of the vehicle and your comment now makes me wonder about the very first Syncro brought to Victoria by the then agents at the top of Elizabeth Street.  It was most rudimentary.  It had the single round lights and was otherwise very stark.  It might have had an internal spare but my memory is very hazy about that.  I might have some information on it in my records and I will try to find it.

Would you have any pictures of this configuration?

Early Australian syncros had the spare in the back.

Check the Bentley and the owner's manual as I remember seeing a monochrome photo somewhere.

Ah, yes.

Page 107 of the Owner's Handbook shows the "clamshell" front carrier and Page 108 shows the spare just bolted to the side panel on the LH side above the engine compartment - but no recess as in the T2.  This is a very crude storage method.

The system that Ken located is a very simple solution indeed.  Whilst it lacks sidewall protection, that could be easily fixed with a plate between the tyre and the retaining bars.
