Ralph,

The most expensive part of such a carrier is not the frame that holds the wheel but the attachment to the body.  If it is to be strong enough to hold a heavy wheel, the attachment to the body has to be well designed and executed.  If you look at Phill's site, you will see the large number of parts that make up the attachment to the body, all of which have to be spot on to avoid the cantilevered weight from deforming or cracking the body at the mounting points.

Harold,

I purchased the Mitsubishi Challenger wheel carrier from 4WD Systems
in South Oz. Whilst it was a great looking carrier and extremely
strong (and massively heavy), altering it to fit my Syncro seemed a
massive task and 4 years later I finally sold it on Ebay and bought a
Garry Lee VW Rack as recommended by Phill.

This is a fantastic carrier, extremely strong and amazingly light
weight. The Mitsubishi one weighed almost twice as much and the
engineering in it was way behind that of the Garry Lee rack.

However, getting the rack to Sydney from Canada cost me $775 + $500
postage = $1,275.00 AUD.

I still think that was the best investment I have made.

Cheers,

Scott

The freight charge sounds ferocious.

Ben (Tan), can you offer any information about freight costs from Canada/US to Australia?

Dan Fleming in Southern California has installed one from a Kia
Sportage. Not sure if that model is sold in Australia.

Since noone has mentioned it yet, I will. The is an aftermarket outfit
in South Africa which makes a very sturdy carrier.
It's made to weld onto bumper brackets. The can be either for a spare
tire or fuel can/propane bottle combo. Install only
on one side or both sides. The downside is weight. The approximately
3" X 3" square tubing is hefty. It can probably
hold the weight of a full grown man. Cost is about US$250 each side.

Les,

USPS International Priority is quite reasonable. I can't speak for
Canada where Gary Lee is from.
US Mail has some sort of government subsidy so cheaper than the likes
of UPS & FedEx.

Gary Lee send much of his larger products through Greyhound Bus Lines.
Unfortunately, Greyhound
stops at the Pacific shoreline.=(

I sent a RHD PS to Andy at Ceduna(?) not too long ago. That cost about
$110 (USD).

Ben,

That's the sort of information I was hoping for.

(For $500US, I would bring a load over in a tinnie!)

Les,

I can recall if you have this groups set-up to accept attachments. Have 3 pics of SA carrier. The last pic is of both spare tyre & propane bottle/fuel can carrier as it sat on my storage locker.

Ben,

That's an interesting approach.  Were these OEM in SA or aftermarket?

Les,

It is my understanding that they were sold by VW dealers in RSA but most likely aftermarket. They are very well made though
more robust than most people need. One thing I forgot to mention is the latching mechanism is meant to be bolted behind a
factory tow hitch or something similar. That L-shaped flat bracket in the photos is the piece that holds the latch.

I should caution you about the inexpensive carriers sold in Germany. Most do not fit the contours of the T3. If you tighten them too
much, they will force the rear corners out of shape. I had one of these to which was retailed by Winkler. It looks very similar to the
models sold by Berndt Jaeger.

I have also seen Gary Lee's carriers up close and personal. Though not as well finished as the factory Syncro 16 carriers, they are
a superd alternative IMHO. I was able to compare them side by side. I can'r remember who it was but someone in either UK or SA
was making a virtual copy of Gary's carrier much to his dissatisfaction.

BenT
Ben,

The Gary Lee design is very sensible in that it picks up on a very strong part of the rear body, it spreads the pickup point load well and it employs rose joints to eliminate twist of the hinge line.  It is useful to hear from people who have used them like Phill or done a comparative inspection as you have done.

The SA design leaves a bit to be desired in that the load has a long moment arm as well as mandating the use of the towbar.

Les,

To the best of my knowledge, THAT is how they came from VW beginning in the early 90's.
They also got those larger rear side windows about the same time.

BenT
Crikey!  I hadn't even noticed that!  Now that I compare the pic with our Australian delivery Syncros, I see that the air intake is considerably longer also.  It goes all the way to the bottom of the deeper windows.  Wonder why?  Any clues?

Just noticed something else.  The vehicle pictured appears to have a filler cap where the 2WD T3 has its front fuel tank.  Any idea what it is?
