Syncro stranded

I gather the stock ones work fine, but he says he gets a bit more power, slightly better fuel economy and improved cooling management with his Davies Craig electric pump as opposed to the belt-driven VW one. Others might like to take it into consideration when replacing their water pumps, perhaps. Sorry, I should have changed the subject line here.

Water pumps are not really a problem on T25s.

In the early days they were until VW changed the type of belt to the toothed type and stopped the gorilla mechanics from overtightening them.

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know the outcome here, following your reassurances and advice. Thanks for that. It did turn out to be the water pump and surrounding hoses. So, now all repaired and awaiting pick-up. As I mentioned to Les, after we gave Lloyd the go-ahead, Tony remembered my cousin had fitted a Davies Craig pump to his Syncro and that he swears by it. Oh well, perhaps a missed opportunity, but at least ours is back on the road without breaking the bank, and is running well.

Francesca.

Dear Francesca,
Could I add to the stories hoping that your problem proves relatively minor. My syncro displayed similar symptoms when my wife and I were down in the extreme south west of W.A. It proved to be a water pump like many have suggested and was fixed within a day before RACV extra cover had to truck it back across the Nullabor! There was no car hire service within cooee however to take advantage of that facet of the cover.'
We're down in Tassie for a few weeks for 1 of my son's wedding next week.My syncro is sitting where you have seen it outside my home.If it could assist you complete your holidays you would be welcome to it but I'd need to know promptly to get a key to you before my last son comes over to join us next Thursday. It may even be easier to post you my key direct. It has a lap and a lap/sash belt in the back if you are thinking child seats.

It should not be too surprising that a waterboxer engine needed a waterpump.
The normal life of a good quality usually german-made aftermarket water pump on a 2.1 waterboxer engine is about 70,000 miles, in my experience.
They most definitely are not waterpumps that last say, 15 years. Not at all. I wouldn't go on a trip without at least a good used spare waterpump on board, or a new one, in my kit.   It's a quite common failure item.
If one wanted to be proactive, I'd say 'just replace it' every 60,000 miles, with a high quality one.

I'm glad the members are back on the road !

I consider 70k (miles) an acceptable life for a waterpump.

I always carry a spare. they're cheap enough to have a new one in the kit.

Scott, you can add my w/pump to your  list, it quit after only 18 years, maybe it didn’t like the Evian Water in the cooling system, which I always use to safe the studs . So far so good, the heads have never been off.   hartmut

accompanied by a loud hissing noise – The plastic cap on the tank to your left (header) had failed but was still on top of the tank so it was not easily detectable where the steam was

coming from.  Anyway, I am confident the problem is a small one!   Hartmut

With all those kilometres of hoses in the cooling system I guess it could be one somewhere! However, I did notice a sudden loss of power, which I find worrying. On the good side (I hope), the engine sounded like it was running smoothly, and no white smoke issuing from the exhaust, though plenty of steam and leakage from elsewhere. At least Santa made it to Wandiligong in time to stuff the stockings, although he had to trade down from a Syncro to Rudolf and Co.

Francesca.

Scott,
I'll wager it's just a leaking coolant hose. Happened to me once with the hose off the plastic distribution fitting under the AFM, a common problem hose, easily replaced or even patched temporarily. Need someone a bit handy though.

The 25yo T3 Syncro remains viable due to an unprecedented worldwide support base, not includiing VAG.
Ordinary folk can all kiss that support base goodbye should VAG ever produce an equally capable new model. Be terrific for the well heeled though eh.

So if for example one maintained G12+ coolant at 40%-50% concentrate and ran a looser than spec belt and had a newish blue pressure cap, will it still eventually fail in some way anyway ... such as old age? Or is it generally so reliable, it requires an adverse condition first before it fails as above? Thanks.

If It Exists, You'll Find it on SEEK Shopping Trolley Mechanic

Electric water pumps, and particularly the Davies Craig (they are used a lot on experimental engines), have a number of advantages but this matter should be considered on a service life versus engine/vehicle life basis.

Phill nominates 70,000 miles as a service life.  This is reasonable and also conservative in the light of experience.  Our Syncros are all around 20+ years on the road and water pump failure is not that common, age of vehicle notwithstanding.

Whilst it was very inconvenient for Francesca (en route to a holiday destination), I do not see this as a pressing problem.  Phill’s suggestion is nonetheless very sound – keep a new spare in stock.

Les

.

Ken,

If everything else is as you nominate (kept within spec), I think that it comes down to service life.

Scott, you can add my w/pump to your  list, it quit after only 18 years, maybe it didn’t like the Evian Water in the cooling system, which I always use to safe the studs . So far so good, the heads have never been off.   hartmut

Well done Francesca.

That dreaded waterpump strikes again.

Thats now 3 syncros I know that have had this problem - but hey they are 20 years old.

Cheers

Once the bearing goes the seals don't last long.

Well everything wears out eventually.
Funny you should say that. Volkswagen has a large water distilling plant at the Wolfsburg factory for use in new vehicles.

I read on the Samba.com that Volkswagen in one of its outlets (cant remember which Country) actually built a full sized 18 hole golf course just for its customers to use.

Hence the VW spring water company is no real surprise.

I have to agree with Phill on waterpump longevity. Although it is a
consumable item, mine have lasted well past the 70K service life Scott
Foss suggested. I suspect, just like headgaskets, maintenance and
quality of the part plays a crucial role.

I have either been lucky did something right for a change. Have gotten
200k+ miles on my WBX water pumps. I wish I could say the same thing
about my former 928. Pump goes at about 70k. Cost 8 times the VW pump.

I don't think it's nessarily that the belt was run too tightly, though of course that will shorten w. pump life if it's just 'too, too tight.'

on the coolant itself :
for whatever it is worth,  one guy in the US  posted oce  that he ran the VW Blue Coolant, and the silicates in it caused his w. pump to fail early, like at 50K miles. I have no idea if that's true or not, but that it's an interesting possibility to consider.

the coolant mixture I run ...and I work on cars full time, and have for many decades, and watercooled vanagons for 20 + years is....
Extended Life Preston anti-frz, mixed 50/50 with water ( freeze protection to minus 32 degrees F ...or thereabouts, and the boiling point of that mixture is way high, like 250 F ) ...AND  to that I add a little machinist's water soluble oil.  Cutting oil.

I've done this to many hundreds of cooling systems at least,  for over 20 years. The machinist's water soluble oil provides some water pump lubricatin, and it's a great rust inhibutor.  I wouldn't consider running any cooling system without a good anti-frz in it, even in summer, especially in summner actually ! ..and this machinist's water soluble oil.  Like a cup full  in the whole van.

and you can't change the coolant too often on a waterboxer or diesel Vanagon. You never get all of the old stuff out anyway.
Once  a year would not be too frequent to change it.
I don't know how if your cooling systems corrode down there, but in North America ....cooling system corrosion is a real issue
It's just horrifying seeing to bottom side of some waterboxer cylinder heads ....etc. etc. etc.
I've seen so much rotted out stuff in vanagon cooling system parts it's just awful.  It's really important to keep a good coolant mixture in there.
as for 'phosphate free' ......I think that might depend on how good the water you have to use with the a-frz is.
I've always just used tap water.  I have read that 'hard water' isn't good in cooling systems....and prehaps that's where the 'phosphate free' thing started.  I'm not seeing any corrosion with the mixture I mentioned above, ever.
