Syncronauts All, We Have Problems.

It was inevitable that the day would come when essential Syncro
parts began to dry up. That day has arrived and VAG is listing some
very essential parts as NLA – No Longer Available.

We have many alternatives to the MV engine, we can fabricate
suspension parts and find alternatives for other things, but we have
very few alternatives when it comes to the transmission.

The 5.43 ring and pinion gear is now listed as NLA. This ratio was
OE for South Africa and Australia. The US got 4.86 as OE but there
is now a demand for the 5.43 due to the fact that so many different
combinations of engines and tyres are in use in the US.
Fortunately, Albins in Australia are willing to make this ratio, so
there will be a supply into the future.

I needed a needle bearing for my own box, 094 311 431, and find that
it is now NLA from VAG. Fortunately, I got a new one from the UK,
so at least I can get my reverse goldmine back on the road.

This is not the case with some key transmission bearings which have
recently been listed as NLA by VAG. We all need to be aware of this
and we need to start looking for alternatives now if we want to keep
our Syncros on the road.

We, the remaining Syncro owners in the world, will have to start
looking out for ourselves because VAG certainly won't! There is no
distinction between owners and the people who have made Syncros
their business over the years. All of us, both the private owners
and the Syncro-based businesses, will have to seek alternatives to
the dreaded NLA of VAG.

In particular, we are going to have to ferret out the bearing
manufacturers who supplied VAG with OE parts and try to persuade
them to keep these essential gearbox bearings available.

Please think about this very carefully. This is the future of our
Syncros

Gday ALL,

I'm sure all of us over time have had to take on the arduous task of
sourcing parts for our syncros. It's very time consuming and it seems a
real shame that others who may have already been down the path of
sourcing those same parts, don't necessary think about making the
details available to other syncro owners about the supplier, their
contact name and address, phone number, website, email address, etc.

Makes sense to me we should all contribute our knowledge of known
suppliers and their details to a centralised listing or database, placed
for example in the files section of this forum.

It's one thing to chat about sources on this forum but that information
soon disappears from view. Having a ready reference database, even if
only for major syncro components in the early stages, would be a
godsend, especially for those away from home, somewhere on the road
around Australia.

We should also have a listing/database for known quality
transporter/syncro service people, divided into States and Territories,
based on syncro owners experiences. I expect there would be more VW
water -cooled service people Australia-wide than just those who
advertise in "VW Magazine Australia". Thoughts anyone?

Cheers.

Ken

Martin,

No, I am talking about parts that are NO LONGER AVAILABLE from VAG, a specific list, along with information on alternatives or work-arounds, not a lit of VW shops.  Even Daryl of AATransaxle got caught flat-footed on one bearing that is NLA.  If he gets caught, what hope is there for the Fred Nurk Volkswagen shop in Outer Elbonia?

Martin,

Yes, I looked at the website - which lists Volkswagen workshops in the US.  How does this relate to parts that are listed as NLA from VAG?  How does this relate to the Syncro owner in Australia who had to scour the world to find the few remaining parts just to get his Syncro back on the road?  The owner whose Syncro has already been off the road for two months because of the essential parts No Longer Available from VAG

Martin, I am not being difficult, I am trying to insure the future for Syncro owners.  Now.  Not sometime in the future when most of our Syncros are off the road.

If I got it wrong in trying to find the parts needed to get my Syncro back on the road, I really need to know where I went wrong.

I am in Scotland and am hopefully meeting up with the guys from Syncronutz tomorrow. I will find out what I can. I should be able to meet up with Syncrospares while I am here also.

Phill

P.S. I just bought the last MV syncro thermostat housing in England! (They are NLA from Germany)

I think this post was seperate to your NLA enquiry. It would be good to have an Aussie listing similar to Martin's link.

Ken's idea is very sound.  We certainly need to pool our information on the very few places that have real Syncro knowledge.  Could I here ask our group members to forward such information so that we can start a data base.

Hey All,

I think this is a good idea.

One source of NLA parts would be wreckers of course. I would hope a
list / database could include a section on wreckers in Australia who
may have T3 transporters, and may even have a syncro wreck from time
to time.

There are still parts I am searching for that could only be found on a
wreck. It's just take so much time on every occasion sorting through
the phone books and calling 15 different places on each occasion. I
would love to track down caravelle front doors one day with the
electric windows and mirrors. Also, I need the skid rails that cover
the engine, and would love to find more underbody protection stuff,
the front cv joint protectors etc.

An Aussie listing, with also reference to the overseas locations that
often end up being cheaper even with postage, would be really handy.
E.g., I still am unsure, can you get good / new parts cheap from South
Africa?

I am particularly after some mud flaps at the moment. Also the water
junction H thingy that sits tucked up in behind the firewall sorta
near the starter. Phill was able to give me some leads on this one,
but I still haven't gotten around to making phone calls or even
looking up the part number, and I've now forgotten who you suggested
Phill! gee I am hopeless, anyway!

So that this may be a comprehensive and highly helpful listing for
Aussie Syncronauts (and perhaps overseas syncros to) may I suggest the
following draft categories;

1. Super hard to get parts (And where to try getting them)
2. New parts sources
3. Aussie Wreckers
4. Overseas Wreckers
5. Aussie Mechanics (and maybe comments / what jobs they have done for
you. e.g. what engine conversions do they have experience in)
6. Overseas Mechanics
7. Other Websites / Info sources

Yes I know bits and pieces or similar lists can be found on other
parts of the web, but this is the sort of info I need with an Aussie
focus. If we could get it organised well I know I would find this
really helpful. How should we gather and collate this info?? Totally
open to suggestions or other ideas, I definitely don't have the same
skills or know-how of many of our group members, just thought I would
throw in my 2 cents.

:) Sam

PS Found there is a vanagon wiki now - and I thought I had searched
just about every vanagon website! Another reason we need a good database!

Gday Sam and all,

What have I started? ..... lol.

Opened a pandoras box or is it just a half baked idea that will wither
on the vine due to a lack of input from ALL of us?

Your wish list is pretty extensive eh Sam. Wow!

Before we get serious about this, I'd like to hear from everyone as to
whether or not they are prepared to spend some time gathering such info,
encompassing ALL States and Territories and Overseas, not just now but
on an ongoing basis so that the info remains current and then proves to
be of immense value to each of us.

I'd like to think 1% of the members here don't get lumbered with 100% of
the effort to bring this to fruition. Seriously, we need an indication
from ALL members willing to GET EXCITED and ACTIVE about this project.
Otherwise
........................................................................\
............................................?

Everyone's comment .... please?

Cheers.

Ken

I'm happy to help with whatever I can from my end of the Pacific. California has been the

there are lots of VW fans willing to spend money to support those companies who manufacture
obsolete parts.

Hi Ken, Les et al

I’m happy to contribute, I seem to spend hours looking at vdub sites anyway.

Does the yahoo site have the functionality needed?

We could start with Sam’s list and go from there.

I'd like to think 1% of the members here don't get lumbered with 100% of
the effort to bring this to fruition. Seriously, we need an indication
from ALL members willing to GET EXCITED and ACTIVE about this project.

Everyone's comment .... please?

Gary,

I am prepared to put in the time to assemble information and make it available.  I posted the same message to all of the major Syncro groups.  The response so far has been les than encouraging but responses continue to come in.

Initially, I will collate whatever information that is received into a Resources folder along the lines that Ken suggests.  We all have resources to draw on, be it a very reliable workshop or parts supplier.  The time has come to catalogue what we individually know for the benefit of the collective members.

If this gains eventual support from around the world, I will set up a dedicated website but for now, it will be an Australian enterprise.  That said, it must be noted that our website has a number of overseas members who could make contributions relevant to their own countries.

Re: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Re: Syncronauts All, We Have Problems.
Great Les

I think the US and UK have some info already with syncro.org and club80-90 etc but agreed the overseas input would be invaluable. I can setup a standard online php forum fairly quickly if that would help but this would be outside the Yahoo system and need moderating as well as hosting. I could host it for free for a while but if the traffic became significant it would be an issue. Be best to keep it yahoo if we can I assume?

Cheers all, looking forward to some invaluable info.
Gary

Content:

I posted drawings for projectz two replica bumpers on the site a while back, that could go up.

How about this as a starting point for wreckers?
