T25- VW Transporter -2.1 watercooled- 5 speed

Technical Question

Gear Change- A problem i have is that the gearchange becomes difficult after about 10kms.

When cold it is fine- have not done any adjustment as suggested in the manual yet- any suggestions would be appreciated.

The vehicle has done 147,000 kms and records(invoices from previous owner) don't show any work done on transmission yet. I know i will have to replace the nylon bush on the end of the spring mechanism on 1st gear soon.

Thanks,

Don,

Nine times out of ten, any gearchanging difficulties are caused by the shift linkage adjustment and sometimes also the need for new bushes.  If you haven't got a copy of Bentleys, in which the adjustment is well covered, get one.

Gday Don,

ditto what Les has said, also at the bottom of the gear lever, in the
space underneath where the spare wheel is, you'll see overhead the black
metal box that is the gear selector. Check gear lever operation in
there, in particular reverse/G gear lockout, also re-applying grease
inside that box to all surfaces that contact during a gear change is a
good idea, makes for a smoother change. Also there are a couple of
rubbing blocks that fit on the end of the gear lever, apparently they
wear out over time and rumour has it they have been NLA for quite some
time.

A local solution done to a friends Transporter by a VW mechanic was to
cut out some flat pieces from a durable type plastic drum and wherever
the rubbing blocks normally rub on the black metal box during a gear
change, he pop rivetted pieces of the plastic to the inside of the metal
box, in effect achieving the same result, restoring the required
distances relationship between box and lever.

Cheers.

Ken

Don,

If you are going to adjust the linkage yourself, bear in mind the basic spring loading arrangement.

The free plane is the third/fourth plane.  The spring loading comes into effect when the lever is moved to the left to the first/second plane.  It happens occasionally that people try to set the lever with the first/second plane free.  This doesn't work!
