Greetings Hart
Is this the 1st time for a gearbox overhaul for the Tristar?

Bob
Skot, I think the Central C roads did it, went there after the Nationals....( to be honest, it started going down to SYD) Ha.

Hart,
That looks like the roads around the Central Coast of NSW.
Good job you had it fixed before it did any major damage.
See you up @ Valla soon.
Cheers,
Skot

250 000 km Trakka , Syncronizer rings have hairline cracks, shiftrod bushing (1 only) , c/w-pinion are ok. Hart
So the moral of the event, if you notice a noise from the g/box stop and have it checked, the main bearing ( $340) is the weak link . If in doubt check the magnetic oil plug for metal shavings.

Looks noisy.
What else needs replacing?
How many kms?
Is this the TriStar box?

Pete, don’t wanna frighten you, just always show awareness to your senses like hearing. If there is an unusual noise, do something about it, doesn’t have to be expensive if you catch it in the early stages.
Re decoupler, wouldn’t have a T3 without it.
Oiling plates, although it’s hard to tell if they are any good, but they certainly can’t do any harm. I’m contemplating to install oil cooling, just looking for an oil pump, the rest I have got .
Just ANOTHER project.
Colourful Greetings, Hart

Hart what are your thoughts on the aftermarket SA oiling plates as i understand they help the oiling of the gearbox mainshaft bearing??
You certainly have explored areas of our machines that terify mere mortals. Are you contemplating a decoupler for the Trakka.
Keep up the good fight

Greg,
Aeration has to be guarded against on the return side. It should not be a problem after the oil has been through a cooler but should be kept in mind.

I am also interested in your set up Hart. A good quality, quite pump is pricey. Are you using the drain and fill holes or tapping new ones. I like the idea of having the return oil showering down on all the important bits. Greg E

Greg, Haven’t started yet, but seeing the gearboxes at Ron’s w/shop, the ones he builds for off road racing, which almost all have oil cooling with return of oil over c/w and pinion, gave me ideas.
Les, could you give us some more info on the aeration and what to watch for? As my g/box is out, now would be the time to do the fittings etc. And Ron would be the right person to do it as he is doing it all the time. He suggested not to use the drain as a pick up point because of its low position.

Hart yes they can run hot on hiway running and an oil cooler would be a great thing..
Please take some pics and put in the photos as I cant access the photos in messages.

Hart and Greg,
Ron has homed in on a key factor when he says not to pick up from the lowest point.
It is essential to have a safety margin in the event of an oil leak in the cooler circuit. If the pickup is from the lowest point, the pump will very quickly empty the gearbox. If it is above, the pickup position needs to be such that some gears are still able to touch the sump oil and therefore fling oil around the interior of the box. (You can still use the drain plug but with a standpipe to set the level.)
With full dry sump engines and gearboxes, the oil being picked up by the pump is already aerated because it has already been flung around. (The insides of engines and gearboxes are extremely busy places!!) Before being returned to the sump, the oil is usually run through a pepper pot which allows the air to separate out.
In the case of a partial dry sump (picking up from above the lowest point), there will still be some entrained air in the oil but this tends to separate out as it travels through the oil cooler. When it gets back to the gearbox, it can run through a horizontal pipe above the gear sets with outlet holes over each gear set.
There is certainly a it of work involved but, give the ambient temperature that are common on Australia road surfaces, it is a very good move.
Les
PS: Greg, pump first, then the cooler.

Re: T3 gear box
Greg, Haven’t started yet, but seeing the gearboxes at Ron’s w/shop, the ones he builds for off road racing, which almost all have oil cooling with return of oil over c/w and pinion, gave me ideas. Les, could you give us some more info on the aeration and what to watch for? As my g/box is out, now would be the time to do the fittings etc. And Ron would be the right person to do it as he is doing it all the time. He suggested not to use the drain as a pick up point because of its low position. Hart
Greg, I will go over on Saturday and try to find out more .Ha.

Can you get pics of his sand rail setups Hart? Also finding out if he could advise/supply pumps would be good too. So he just dumps all the return straight onto the c&p? Greg E
