T3 Syncro Camper For sale on ..... eBay.

I'm not too sure if this person is a member or not but he/she will take a buy it now of $5,500. Needs an engine. Recently replaced VC. No rear Diff lock.  Would be great value for money providing you could find a second hand engine around...there is a 2.1 at Nambour wreckers for $1100. maybe a good buy at 600-800 if they could provide a compression test etc....

thoughts guys??

This one appears to be an ex-Telstra van converted by Discoverer Campers that has been sitting out in the open around Nimbin area for a while as they say it has rust issues as well as engine problems.

Even if you had a bare van with good body and mechanicals it may be worth buying and swapping over the camper conversion and using the rest for parts?

Hart - nice catch :-)

Not many families add 2 Syncros to the stable within 1 year, let alone 1 week!

Mine is also a Discover type conversion and weighs just under 2.5 tonnes (according to a weighbridge last year)

Looks like Annie will have to come to the Nationals as well now - 3 Syncros to bring down :-)

Mark.

Hi Hartmut. I had my camper over the scales at our local weighbridge a few weeks ago at 2.25 tonne. (no pop top) This would confirm Marks figure of bit under 2.5 tonne. Don't forget to empty the water tank. If your passing through nambucca heads on your trip give me a ring 65685025 drop in for a cuppa and check out a couple a syncro projects in progress. Cheers Bill.

Thanks for that Bill, will be in contact. Have to think how to get that Syncro from Nimbin to Port Macquarie!  Cin Cin    Hartmut

Hart,

Just get a car trailer, load the new toy up - apparently facing the rear is the best as it keeps the weight of the donk over the tow ball meaning slightly less chance of fish tailing down the freeway.

Take a mate along and - Road Trip!

Cheers,

Scott,  how can you be so positive ???? Will the trailer hold 2.5 t of weight  ??  Won’t the Holden VB8 break up under the stresses ?? I guess we try it on Friday. At least my mate with the Holden is a real Ocker Aussie—can teach me a few words aussi speak ,he grew up on top of a pub out west.....

Is fishtailing a great issue with dual axle trailers ,any experience by anyone??     Tschuess    (seeya in my speech)   Hart

But Ken,

Hart previously lugged 3 tonnes around behind the tristar before he even
upgraded the brakes.

At least the tristar will stop the little road train.

My 71 low-light kombi which weighs around 1200kgs was towed by a 2wd T3 on a
car trailer (with similar qualities to which you speak of from hire
companies) all the way from Sawtell (just south of Coffs Harbour) to the
Central Coast in the middle of summer.

At least the weather is cool now.

Give it a go Hart.

No worries!

Cheers,

Scott

Hartmut. Try Andrews MT,Auto freighters, in Kempsey.Ph 20 65624978 or 02 66627205. I used them a couple of years ago to bring a syncro from Port stevens to Nambucca. Cost $401.50. They dropt it off on the highway as the truck was too big for the suburbs. Worth a try. Bill.

Thanks for the tip, Bill, they can only p/u from Lismore $350 to Prt    have to try to get a flatbed in Lismore to p/u at Nimbin . Let you know what happens     Hartmut

Many moons ago you used to be able to hire an "A frame" towing device which collapsed down in the boot on the way to pick up the vehicle that had carked it. It added little to the weight when towing and allowed the towed vehicle to track closely behind the towing vehicle. (Bit disconcerting when looking in the rear view mirror.)
Fortunately haven't had cause to use such a device recently and had the feeling they may now be illegal except I feel I have seen ads in caravan magazines advertising them for towing Suzukis behind  monster motorhomes.
Does anyone know if  they are indeed legal in all/any States?
I presume it would be possible to use one for a Syncro if the prop.shaft was disconnected?
Hart if the answer to the above 2 questions is positive expect you to be out with your welder and have one knocked up by lunchtime. I might even try to build one from my grandson's Meccano outfit.
Cheers
Roger

These must be legal in NSW as I see them regularly on the F3 (north of Sydney) with a sign on the back of the vehicle saying "Vehicle in Tow".

I have never seen one for hire though.

How does it attach to the vehicle being towed?

Cheers
Roger

Scott, it is of course a fixed attachment only allowing vertical movement. It normally is attached under the car on some chassis part. Thinking of Peter’s bulbar-----ideal ! You would have to run a cable for some lights, but what about limits on unbraked mass?? Any thoughts?? hartmut

Hart,

What about the steering - wouldn't that need to be locked to prevent the tow car wanting to turn some other direction?

When driving down a steep hill - keep a large anchor attached to the rear of the vehicle by a very strong rope and just toss it out the window when the brakes cant stop you any more!

Cheers,

Scott
