Temp gauge - False signal

Hi there - Any one ever experrienced this:

Turn on ignition
Temp gauge rises straight to max temp
Whilst the level indicator warning light flashes too.

Engine not hot
Expansion tank full of coolant

pluss new thermostat
thermo fan kicks in only when needed (ie the engine is not too hot)

my friend advises it may be a bad earth ???

Coolant level sensor in the expansion tank.

Try cleaning it first.

Hi Hamish

It could also be the low level indicator relay under dash left hand side above elect. center.
